The Process: Response

I have preferred the more concrete definitions in my responses to the previous video topics but on “process” I feel a more loose approach is needed. In the video Andrew Stevens left it simply at “does it feel right” and I think the design process more or less boils down to that. The only overlapping element seemingly from those speaking in the clip is that a comprehensive understanding of what your designing for is required. So certainly an intense research phase is in order, but after that, however one arrives at the solution to their design problem is fair game.

What is Graphic Design: Response

In the video, Quentin Newark had a perfectly concise reply to the given question. He stated, “Graphic Design is communication and it communicates through the combination of image and words”. Communication is as bare-bones a definition of design as you are going to get. I think this definition operates well. If a design fails to communicate as intended, it no longer seems designed.

introductions

Hello all,

My name is Noah Evans, I am currently majoring in Animation. This is my third time returning to college as the life of a cartoonist is not a particularly lucrative one.  I have worked in Hollywood and Burbank for many years creating and assisting on numerous short films. I am Trained in traditional hand-drawn animation and have extensive studies in political cartoons and propaganda art.

What a Graphic Designer Does

I think the most relatable statement in the video for me was that “Some graphic designers are indistinguishable from illustrators.” I have done my fair share of freelance illustration and solid design is paramount for any project to feel original and translatable for an audience. Herein lies the crux of what I believe a designer does. Visually communicate a message. The next element I noted is that design is fundamentally a “commercial art”. Personally, this is my favorite aspect. Unlike all other artistic aspirations, Design is not subjective! The product functions as you and your client intend (Designed) or it fails. In comparison to your standard gallery affair, no inflated tragic descriptions will make your visuals more appealing. I am curious to see how this un-subjective quality will be handled during class feedback.
