A graphic designer’s process for designing is very tedious, but it is very rewarding once it has been accomplished. Something very important to remember is that an artist does not concern himself with the final product. A designer on the other hand is focused on the product and how it will affect the audience at the end of the production. The whole concept of design is focused on the user and how it affects them. Not only does it matter how it affects them, but also if the design is compatible with the person and if they can understand it. Before a design is made, the creators think about the end goal and the audience that it will affect. Once they have figure out who will be affected, they will then discuss their budget, the type of materials that are going to be used, and then they also discuss the time limit they have to finish the project. An important step in creating the product is that after setting up the general prototype, they bring out the prototypes to the public and check for feedback so they can fix it to make it more user friendly and understandable. Not only is having a functioning product important, but it is also critical to have a beautiful design for the employer. After the prototypes have been modified, the final product is created and then sent to the employer.
Many people assume that graphic designers sit around and design signs, books, and logos, but this is only scratching the surface of what they do. Graphic design is the ability to interpret and understand what the individual customer or company wants in their design. Once they have an understanding, it is then translated into the final product. Being a graphic designer is also about establishing communication and clarity with the other person so that the job can be achieved quickly and efficiently.
Graphic designers must understand that their product will be affecting an audience in some form. They must be precise and on point with their designs and the guidelines that the customer has brought them. They could be designing airplane emergency exit pamphlets, or they could be designing heavy-duty equipment operation manuals. With that, it is crucial that they style these products correctly, so the message is transparent and that there is no confusion for the audience nor the company when they are reading the pamphlets or the operation manuals. Graphic design is a large category with many different types talents and skills that fall underneath it. It is our job to educate ourselves more on what other artists do in the graphic design field. It is also our job to learn how to communicate with employers efficiently and clearly so that the final product will be not only be loved, but it will meet all the requirements that were expected.
After watching this video, the part that resonated with me was when the gentleman at the beginning said “20 years ago, if I tried to explain what graphic design was, I would have said its to design logos, books, posters, and people would have stared at me as though I was from another planet. Today, uh if people say, “what do you do?” and I say I’m a graphic designer, they say oh I love Sabon.” Growing up, I was always interested in the colors, shapes, fonts, and overall design of logos that I saw throughout my day and how it affected the people around them. In this current day of age, majority of people are aware of what graphic design is, but there are many who still do not know this. Later into my life, I gained more knowledge about creative design and how every design we see has been specially designed by someone.
There will always be people designing artwork for consumers either that be for personal or corporate commissions. What makes it interesting though is that there are two types of people when it comes to being aware of artwork and how it effects their daily life. There are the people who are somewhat or fully aware of the backstage design plan that takes place for the final product, and then there are the people who are not even aware of how any of the brands they are purchasing have been carefully designed and targeted towards them. With this being said, I have always wondered, if every person knew about the back stage design plan for an item, how would that change their outlook on their daily life and the decisions they made?
Hello everyone, my name Chase Haynes and I am originally from San Diego, California but now I reside Brooklyn, NY. I am currently a full-time student, and this is my first year at BMCC. I am very blessed to say that I have chosen my major to be animation and motion graphics. I have only been up here since the 1st of August, but I have adapted to the environment well and I am very excited that I am here. Photography and graphic design have always been a part of my life, but with attending school now I am excited to take it a step further and pursue my love and passion for drawing and 3D modeling.
I am a very outgoing person that loves to socialize and interact with others when possible. On my free time I enjoy creating music, designing, and taking photographs of the area around me. After taking this course, I hope to learn ways to improve my ability to design. I also am looking to learn more about the Adobe apps so I can become a better artist and excel in this career field. Taking my first semester of school all online is not what I was expecting, but due to everything going on, it is what it is. I look forward to meeting everyone and I wish you all the best of luck.
