Many people assume that graphic designers sit around and design signs, books, and logos, but this is only scratching the surface of what they do. Graphic design is the ability to interpret and understand what the individual customer or company wants in their design. Once they have an understanding, it is then translated into the final product. Being a graphic designer is also about establishing communication and clarity with the other person so that the job can be achieved quickly and efficiently.
Graphic designers must understand that their product will be affecting an audience in some form. They must be precise and on point with their designs and the guidelines that the customer has brought them. They could be designing airplane emergency exit pamphlets, or they could be designing heavy-duty equipment operation manuals. With that, it is crucial that they style these products correctly, so the message is transparent and that there is no confusion for the audience nor the company when they are reading the pamphlets or the operation manuals. Graphic design is a large category with many different types talents and skills that fall underneath it. It is our job to educate ourselves more on what other artists do in the graphic design field. It is also our job to learn how to communicate with employers efficiently and clearly so that the final product will be not only be loved, but it will meet all the requirements that were expected.
I agree once they have an understanding, it is then translated into the final product. And it is important that graphic designers must understand that their product will be affecting an audience in some form.
I appreciate that you acknowledged the responsibility a designer has to their client as well as their audience. I agree that it is as important for a design to communicate as well as it looks. As you pointed out with manuals and warnings, sometimes design has to achieve more than esthetics.
