Why did I choose to advocate for this issue?
I chose to advocate for this issue because oftentimes, children from other countries who move to the US at an early age and continue their education get misdiagnosed as needing special education or they get pushed back a grade. Just because they came from another country doesn’t mean they don’t know the material. Because of this, these children get misdiagnosed as having learning disabilities when all they need is additional support.
Why is this issue personally meaningful to me?
This is meaningful to me because many of my family members have been misdiagnosed because they came from a different country. They had to do it a year over again, as if they didn’t know the material.
How does this topic impact me as an early childhood educator?
This topic impacts me as an early childhood educator because I want to be a special education teacher, and I hope none of the students I teach in the future are misdiagnosed as having learning disabilities because of where they come from.
