Sarriah Sage W1

One of my favorite animated films of all time is “Ponyo” by Studio Ghibli. This beautiful film was published in Japan on July 19th, 2008. Yet about a month later, an English version was released in theaters, on August 14th, 2008. According to Wikipedia, “Ponyo” became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time. It earned over 204$ million USD worldwide; when “Ponyo” was released in the U.S, it had the largest opening for a Ghibli film ever.

Studio Ghibli was first founded on June 15th, 1985, by its directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshiro Suzuki. Miyazaki and Suzuki first started the studio due to the success of a film they worked on prior; however, they invited Takahata to join the company immediately after. The trio’s studio was soon invested in by Tokuma-Shoten, a publishing company that resides in Tokyo. This allowed Studio Ghibli to flourish and become the famous studio that everyone knows it as.

My first time ever watching “Ponyo” was at an AMC theater, when I was just a toddler. While I did not fully understand what was happening on the screen, I was still enthralled by it either way. When I rewatched the movie about 3-4 years ago, it reminded me why I loved it so much. “Ponyo” fluid hand-drawn animation and amazing artwork blew me away when I was younger, and still does now. The attention to detail in the film is mind blowing; seeing how much care was put into simple scenes of fish swimming and interacting with their environment was so breathtaking to me.

Over the years I have seen many movies yet, Studio Ghibli’s “Ponyo” still remains as one of my favorites due to its beautiful animation styles and immersive scenes. Studio Ghibli came from humble beginnings yet became an iconic force in the animation scene, I believe future generations would enjoy “Ponyo” just as much I had.

Yisheng Wang – Prompt 2

My favorite animated film is The Garden of Words. It is a Japanese animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai. He described an emotional and heartwarming story by using a lot of techniques of animation expression, such as adding something in the background but in front of the characters like a branch between them to express the separation, and using the difference distance between characters at each time to represent their feelings that are changing and etc.

Name an animated film or tv show that you like. Why do you think you like it?  Is it the characters, the animation techniques? Include this in the journal post. Research the studio/artist that created it as well as the date it was created and include this information in your post.

An animated TV show that I’m enjoying at the moment is Danny Phantom a show from my childhood that just never seems to lose its touch even with me now in college. The reason why I like that program is due to the designs of the characters, along with the personalities of each character how those personalities can create conflict with one another, and how some of these characters you may not think would work together work very well even with the difference in personalities. The man who made the show was Butch Hartman he worked for Nickelodeon from 1997 to 2018  at the time when producing Danny Phantom as well as making Fairly Odd Parents at the same time. Both are some of the few faces standing with Spongebob to be part of the branding of Nickelodeon. Danny Phantom was released on April 3rd, 2004, and ran for a little over three years getting 3 seasons ending on August 24th, 2007. Similar to Fairly OddParents which is one of  Butch Hartman’s other projects he was working on at the time. Danny Phantom was a hand-drawn animation similar to the other shows Hartman has worked on.

Cassandra Cortez – Prompt 2

My favorite show would be The Amazing World of Gumball. It is a sitcom made by Ben Bocquelet and aired first on Cartoon Network on May 3rd, 2011. I used to watch all the episodes when they came on as a kid. The two main characters, Gumball and Darwin, were entertaining and I enjoyed the different art styles and current media references they added in certain episodes.

Angelica Labador, Prompt 2

Name an animated film or tv show that you like. Why do you think you like it?  Is it the characters, the animation techniques? Include this in the journal post. Research the studio/artist that created it as well as the date it was created and include this information in your post.

An animated tv show that I like is The Owl House, created by Dana Terrace. The Owl House was aired on Disney on January 10, 2020. The things I like most about the show are the characters, the animation itself, and the story/plot. As the show goes on and time has passed in the actual story, you can see how each character grew and changed. There are scenes where the animation becomes smooth and looks really cool, such as most of the fight scenes and the dance scene. My favorite scene was the final fight scene between Luz and Belos in the last season, season 3. I like this scene because shows how much Luz has grown and learned throughout the series. I like the story because at first, the goal of Luz seems simple enough to achieve. Then as Luz stays in the demon realm longer, she runs into more trouble and her goals change and get more difficult throughout the series. Since Luz’s goal changes, it makes you want to watch more and figure out what happens next.
