Western studios had larger budgets and commercial success, while Eastern studios relied on state funding and faced censorship.
- The Czech film, “The Hand,” was considered subversive by the government because it criticized totalitarianism, deviated from socialist realist aesthetics, and challenged the regime’s authority over artistic expression. - In “Steamboat Willie,” sound and music play a significant role in emphasizing the action enhancing the comedic elements, and revealing the characters’ distinctive personalities. Synchronized sound effects correspond with the actions of the screen, and lively music complements Mickey Mouse’s character. The use of sound creates a depth of experience for the viewers.
- In Snow White’s meeting with the seven dwarfs, each dwarf’s unique personality is distinguishable. Grumpy’s scowling expression and deep voice convey his skeptical nature while Dopey’s clumsy movements and physical gestures highlight his innocence. These differences in appearance, movement, voice, and behavior make it easy for the audience to tell them apart.
For my short paper outline, I have decided that I will be focusing on a childhood favorite of mine: Dinsey’s ‘Pinocchio’ (1940). I will be looking into animation technique, cultural impact, source material comparison, and socio-political context of the film.
In ‘Gertie the Dinosaur’ and Fantasmagorie,’ both pioneering animatinos, lines are used differently.’Gertie’ employs detailed lines to create solid characters, while “Fantasmagorie’ uses fluid lines for surreal visuals. Backgrounds in ‘Gertie’ are realistic setting the scene, while ‘Fantasmagorie’ opted for abrstract backgrounds blending with characters.
Story Circles is my favorite type of oral storytelling. Specifically, Ghost/Campfire Stories. I remember one night I was with my friend stood up very late at night and we went from having deep conversations to sharing our own paranormal experiences.

Prompt 2: Name an animated film or TV show that you like: I have a lot but let’s go with Madoka Magica.
Why do you think you like it? Is it the characters, or the animation techniques? The overall art style of Madoka Magica will never fail to captivate me because of its blend of Anime and Russian-inspired art. The symbolism and meaning behind the story, the literature, and psychological and horrific elements. The animation is just so fluid, gorgeous, and whimsical, and whenever it blends I just find it amazing.
Research the studio/artist that created it as well as the date it was created and include this information in your post: The anime was released by Studio Shaft. It was released as a 12-episode Anime in 2011, then later re-released as two separate animated feature films with better visuals both being released in 2012, following it up with a sequel film in 2013, and another upcoming sequel in 2024.
