One form of oral storytelling I can think of is poetry. I sometimes write poetry whenever I’m struggling with my mental health and want to vent in a way that my family can’t interfere with. Though I have read a few pieces out-loud in an after school program I am a part of. Describe and reflect on these experiences. These moments are usually very intense since they usually involve me letting my more sensitive emotions run rampant. These experiences are different in the sense that instead of relying on visual representations of the intended meaning, poetry uses vocalized presentations to get the message across I think.

My name is Caitlin Walker, the reason I chose this course was because it was a class that I felt would be the most useful to have knowledge in when pursuing my goal. There isn’t a specific type of animation that I am interested in learning about personally. My career goals mostly include me being able to start my own shop for my art pieces, and learning about animation can help give me ideas to promote my own art. My hobbies include: drawing whatever I can see or cats, listening to music, and playing games (mostly open world, or storytelling games.) My favorite food is oxtail with yellow rice and red beans.

An animated show that I like is She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was aired on Netflix on November 13th, 2018. The things that I like about the show is the character developments, the symbolisms, and the story/plot. As the story goes on you can see how each character grow and changed (the main characters, not the other side characters even though i wished we had more episodes to show more of their character and growth)

One of my favorite animated films of all time is “Ponyo” by Studio Ghibli. This beautiful film was published in Japan on July 19th, 2008. Yet about a month later, an English version was released in theaters, on August 14th, 2008. According to Wikipedia, “Ponyo” became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time. It earned over 204$ million USD worldwide; when “Ponyo” was released in the U.S, it had the largest opening for a Ghibli film ever.

Studio Ghibli was first founded on June 15th, 1985, by its directors Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshiro Suzuki. Miyazaki and Suzuki first started the studio due to the success of a film they worked on prior; however, they invited Takahata to join the company immediately after. The trio’s studio was soon invested in by Tokuma-Shoten, a publishing company that resides in Tokyo. This allowed Studio Ghibli to flourish and become the famous studio that everyone knows it as.

My first time ever watching “Ponyo” was at an AMC theater, when I was just a toddler. While I did not fully understand what was happening on the screen, I was still enthralled by it either way. When I rewatched the movie about 3-4 years ago, it reminded me why I loved it so much. “Ponyo” fluid hand-drawn animation and amazing artwork blew me away when I was younger, and still does now. The attention to detail in the film is mind blowing; seeing how much care was put into simple scenes of fish swimming and interacting with their environment was so breathtaking to me.

Over the years I have seen many movies yet, Studio Ghibli’s “Ponyo” still remains as one of my favorites due to its beautiful animation styles and immersive scenes. Studio Ghibli came from humble beginnings yet became an iconic force in the animation scene, I believe future generations would enjoy “Ponyo” just as much I had.

Yisheng Wang – Prompt 2

My favorite animated film is The Garden of Words. It is a Japanese animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai. He described an emotional and heartwarming story by using a lot of techniques of animation expression, such as adding something in the background but in front of the characters like a branch between them to express the separation, and using the difference distance between characters at each time to represent their feelings that are changing and etc.
