UPA uses a very modern simplistic technique in Rooty Toot Toot to accompany a jazz score to a popular song “Frankie and Johnny”. This studio was innovative in the 1950’s for doing a very diffeent style than the Disney realism. A lot of the artists working there had been stiffled and suppressed in their creativity and wish to drive their medium forward, They took influences from modern artists such as Picasso and Matisse so they relied on simple line drawings for backgrounds and stylized characters with an overall flat 2D look and aesthetic.

The idea was to convey the story without the extra detail and work involved which any storyline is not solely dependent on. For the sake of communicating a flow of a fictional narrative, this was effective. Until I saw this type of animation in class I was naively under the impression that The Pink Panther cartoons were the original popular works with this sort of style, the simple background and very 2D characters. With UPA there was an incorporatiin of using bold yet basic shapes for the foundation and main form for each of the individual characters. And the use of simple color themes for each character without much color in the background to compete with the movement of the characters and the overall visual palatte. I suppose it reminds me of Rocky and Bullwinkle as well. I also see a similariy to some art deco sensibilities as far as simple and stylistic line drawings and the use of few color variatiins within a specific piece or drawing.

Aiden Pacheco Prompt 1

The “Rooty Toot Toot” animation is one that effectively uses color and limited movement to tell its story. The animation has a clear limited color palette and utilizes bold contrasting hues. For example, Frankie’s red dress stands out against the green background of the saloon, emphasizing her as a key character. Their movements are often minimal, with a focus on key poses and expressions. This is shown in the courtroom scene where the animation relies heavily on facial expressions and shifts in posture to convey the drama unfolding.

The film’s effectiveness in storytelling stems from its ability to create a mood of suspense and intrigue through visual cues rather than relying on detailed animation or extensive dialogue.

Taylor Fields-Scott W9/ Prompt 1

Rooty Tooty Toot uses a variety of colors, patterns, movement, and drawings to set the mood of the cartoon. Firstly, the style of drawing is sketchy, flat, and cartoonish. The colors of Rooty Tooty Toot are bright and are moreso used to highlight the characters rather than the background. Colors like blue, red, and white were also used to convey moods. I think the heavily stylized patterns, and movements are effective and tells the story because it makes it engaging.

The UPA studio employs a minimalistic color palette and art style that primarily features outlines. Character designs typically consist of a single color complemented by black outlines, allowing for a clear representation of distinct personalities—such as red for the murderer and blue for the singer—creating a stark and effective contrast. The background includes a subtle paper texture that enhances the visual experience. This stylistic approach successfully captures the dramatic essence of the narrative, with the fluidity of the animation effectively conveying the story. A hyper-realistic animation style could diminish the dramatic quality, rendering the storytelling less impactful.

In response to prompt 1 , the colors , patterns , drawings & movement in Rooty Toot Toot are unique in a way that in many scenes , the characters appear to be the exact same color as the background color being used . In other scenes you can see more vivid color filled characters with abstract objects and background colors .The dramatic movements displayed throughout the short film help to tell the story & in some scenes dramatize the plot . For this , I think the illustrator’s direction was effective in portraying the plot and telling the story .

I like the boing boing the boy had as his family was worried about the boy voice. His father called the doctor about boing boing voice making noise. When the doctor cheek on him boing boing said the noise the doctor was shocked. I should say I like the part where the Doctor and his parents were shocked about his voice. What is funny is that the doctor doesn’t want to deal with it. The next day the boing parents were seated chilling but boing boing made a lion sound and the father was scared and shocked. I actually like the part where the father jumps up in shock that his son is making that noise.

In the film “Rooty Tooty Toot ” it had simple shapes, movements, colors and patterns. The movements of the characters were simple you could understand what was happening in the film, as well as.I realized that the people in the stand had bodies that were shapes. It had a bunch of abstract mostly in the background and certain patterns that brought out interest to the film and made it appealing to me.I do think it is effective and tells the story because without things like the abstract in the background it would make the film a visual interest for anyone.
