Taylor Fields-Scott – Final Presentation Outline

Name of Film: Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Why: I am drawn to this film because it was one of the first animated films my mother introduced me to. Not only was the style of animation stop motion, but everything was also made of clay. I remember watching a clip of the step-by-step process of moving the clay for every single shot and being fascinated. The aesthetic is comforting and the premise of having a dog living with an English man and not only being his pet but his companion who can build gadgets and clean a house is funny.

Elements I will be researching/presenting:

  • How long did the film take to make?
  • Who created/distributed the film?
  • In what way was Wallace and Gromit innovative?
  • What influenced the plot for Wallace & Gromit The Curse of the Were-Rabbit?
  • Does the animation style still hold up today?
  • How was Wallace & Gromit The Curse of the Were-Rabbit distinct/similar to what came before it?

Prompt 2

One of the most popular Japanese animated TV show in the US is Dragon Ball Z. It follows the adventures of Goku, who along with other Z fighters, is defending the Earth against evil. The show is distributed on a platform called “Crunchyroll”, that also distributes a variety of Japanese animated TV shows. I think it resonated with American audiences because of it’s action packed battle scenes and “good vs evil” storyline. The show was also aired on the American TV network “Cartoon Network” in the late 90’s on their action-themed evening block named “Toonami”. It became overwhelmingly popular with younger audiences. The series is also popular in Japan. It is considered one of the most influential Japanese animated tv shows of all time.

Rooty Tooty Toot uses a variety of colors, patterns, movement, and drawings to set the mood of the cartoon. Firstly, the style of drawing is sketchy, flat, and cartoonish. The colors of Rooty Tooty Toot are bright and are moreso used to highlight the characters rather than the background. Colors like blue, red, and white were also used to convey moods. I think the heavily stylized patterns, and movements are effective and tells the story because it makes it engaging.

I will focus on the film “The Old Mill” (1937), one of the Silly Symphony shorts. I chose this film mostly because it is reminiscent of movies I watched in childhood. Particularly, movies from Disney. The animation style is not only nostalgic, but it perfectly captures the emotional aspect of the story.

Elements-

  • The animation techniques
  • The influence the film had on the industry, particularly Disney
  • How this film was presented to the public/ the films success
  • The inspiration for the film

Early animated films were based on print comics because they were recognizable. The public commonly read comic strips, so the chances of the film’s success were higher. The visuals for the comic strips were simple, making the production of props and movement much easier to translate onto the big screen. Not only were print comics familiar and simple to recreate, but the characters in the comics were established so the animators already had a headstart for the storyline. Comics made appropriate subjects for film because of the range they were able to have in terms of plot, characters, and settings. Print comics were a widely consumed art form as well.

I chose to answer Prompt 2.

Being an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797 would have probably shocked me, initially considering the period but then I would have been amazed. Gaspard incorporated creepy animated puppets in combination with the ominous environment like smoke, and skulls on the walls to capture the horror. I enjoy horror now so I would have wanted to see this groundbreaking performance more often. I think the kind of entertainment that could elicit some of the same emotions is horror. The horror genre itself is so vast but slashers and paranormal are categories that could still scare and shock most people when done right.

Taylor Fields-Scott – Prompt 1

My name is Taylor Fields-Scott. I chose this course to learn how and why animation is so important. I grew up watching so many different styles and genres of animation. I am interested in the early Disney era of animation. Despite the time, they were able to create such complex work. My major is Multimedia Programming & Design. I am not so sure what I want to do in the future, but I do know I want a career in media and/or tech. I like playing reading, and watching new movies. I have 4 cats and my favorite food is any kind of sandwich.

Prompt 2

My favorite animated film is Coraline. The story and animation design is comforting. I loved the way the characters were designed and moved. The studio that made the film is Laika, it took them 4 years to produce the film, it was released in 2009.
