Name of show : chargeman ken

Why: I am drawn to this show because it was one of the first animatedAnimated 1970s shows that was introduced into by YouTube video and it intrigued me on how bad it really was. Not only was the style of animation but it used clips to the point it was Laughable , but there was also misaligned animation cels. I remember watching a clip between a few Episode and some characters were different colors . The aesthetic was Garish and the premise of a young boy having light powers Defending his Planet by destroying aliens which sometimes try to flee or did not engage in a fight was a little morally questionable.

Elements I will be researching/presenting:

  • How long did the show take to make?
  • How did it become a a cult favorite?
  • Who created/distributed the show ?
  • In what way was chargeman ken innovative?
  • Does the animation style still hold up today?
  • How was chargeman ken distinct/similar to what came before it

The Japanese animated television series known in the United States as “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K” falls within the shonen and comedy genres. The narrative centers around Kusuo Saiki, a high school student with an extraordinary secret: he possesses a diverse range of psychic abilities, including psychokinesis and teleportation. Despite these remarkable powers, Saiki strives to conceal them from his peers, aiming to lead a normal and unremarkable life. The series resonates with American audiences due to its blunt and semi-absurd humor, rooted in the unique situations in which Saiki often finds himself. Interestingly, while the show has garnered significant popularity in the United States, it has not achieved the same level of acclaim in Japan.

The UPA studio employs a minimalistic color palette and art style that primarily features outlines. Character designs typically consist of a single color complemented by black outlines, allowing for a clear representation of distinct personalities—such as red for the murderer and blue for the singer—creating a stark and effective contrast. The background includes a subtle paper texture that enhances the visual experience. This stylistic approach successfully captures the dramatic essence of the narrative, with the fluidity of the animation effectively conveying the story. A hyper-realistic animation style could diminish the dramatic quality, rendering the storytelling less impactful.

Keanna conce week 5 short paper outline

I chose Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 film “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” for my short paper due to was a groundbreaking achievement as the first full-length animated feature, created by a woman in a male-dominated field. Her use of the silhouette animation technique, traditionally seen as feminine, challenged cultural perceptions of women’s roles in both animation and the broader art world and the aesthetic of the film was beautiful.

Keanna Conce W3 journal entry #3

The utilization of printed comics as source material for early animated films, particularly in the United States, was a practical choice due to several reasons. The pre-existing content provided a pre-written storyline and established character designs, simplifying the complex task of creating early animated films. Additionally, the popularity and following of the comics ensured a built-in audience for the animated adaptations. This strategic decision was instrumental in the early success of animated films.

I can imagine if I attended to one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797 would have been an exciting experience, particularly in the absence of modern electricity. The interplay of shadows and the frightening nature of the figures would likely have been simultaneously entertaining and somewhat unsettling. Today, a similar form of entertainment elicit the same type of emotions might be found in a horror movie, where viewers are called upon to willingly suspend their disbelief. Despite being aware of the fiction, the experience remains unsettling to some extent with the macabre which definitely fits within the supernatural horror.

My name is Keanna, I chose this course because I needed to retake this class because the first experience wasn’t the best but I’m here now to prove I can successfully retake this course and of course I chose this class because he is an interesting topic to learn how animation evolved within different time periods. My major is currently animation and motion graphics . Am my career goal is to become a storyboard artist and perhaps make my own film one day.

an animation film that stuck out to me was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I remember going to the movie theater with my mom and my brother, and that movie really transported me into a state of suspension of belief and the animation technique looked good, but it was completely different from the movies that were coming out around the time due to stylization. It was released around June 2nd 2023 by a American company that is Sony Pictures Animation
