Cihan Caglar SP Outline

The Film that I have chosen to write about for this assignment is “Pinocchio”. I want to write about this film because I never grew up watching Disney films and such a monumentally successful film would be interesting to study. The paper will be written following this order of points.

Contextualize

I. Context/ background history about Disney and the creators of the film.

Describe

II. General overview of the story + how and why it differed from the book it was based on.

Analyze

III. The technical aspects of the film like artistic direction, use of audio, and changes in technology.

Quote

IV. Metrics/ box office performance and audience reception.

Conclude

V. How this film fits into the timeline of animation and advances the productions that come after it.

Prompt 2:

I believe that many of the early American animated films were based off print comics for a few reasons. The first is that it was easy to use the already existing art and characters/ illustrations so that more focus could be put into the actual technical aspect of the animation. Another reason is that comics typically feature action and incorporate onomatopoeia along with visual illustrations in an attempt to bring the story to life. It would only make sense that the comic writers who try so hard to get their stories to pop and become lively would gravitate toward trying to animate them. Finally, from a business perspective if you are spending all this capital on this new technology and staff it’s less risky to use an established IP than risk the investment on something new. Much easier to just sell the existing fan base to a new format like Marvel comic readers will probably attend the Marvel movie screenings so it is a safer business move.

Prompt 3: Can you imagine being an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797? What do you think your reaction would have been? Can you think of any form of entertainment that would elicit the same emotions today? (Re-)read/watch these resources for inspiration…

If I was an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows I would have been absolutely terrified. The technology and method in which that show was done was cutting edge for it’s time which I believe would mirror very similarly to a high quality VR experience today. I also think in a more traditional form of entertainment we can also compare it to a haunted house. It states in the reading that the use of magic lanterns were quite common in middle class life which is very surprising. In which case that version seems like it could also resemble other middle class entertainment in other time periods.

Prompt 1

My name is Cihan. I picked this course because I wanted to choose classes outside my comfort zone that I found interesting when fulfilling my general credits. No particular interest in any specific time period but I would love to learn how technology has changed the process. My major is currently business administration. My career goals include finding one that is fulfilling where I can build organizations and important things that help people. I have a 1 year old cat named “Badem” which is Turkish for almond.

Prompt 2

An animated film that really stuck out to me was Spirited Away. I remember nonchalantly watching it one night and being completely entranced in the film, in fact when it ended it had felt like I just had a dream. The atmosphere of the film was extremely well done. It was released on August 31st 2002 by Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli.
