Soul by Pixar, directed by Pete Docter (2020), is the film I chose from my long paper. This film was chosen because I admire the animation and the story. Soul tackled issues of life and death that no other Pixar film has ever explored.

“Rooty Tooty Toot” short film uses simple patterns and drawings for the background and people, as well as specific colors to help distinguish certain characters and aid in the storytelling. The movements in the film are very dramatic, such as when she sits at the bar or when they show different scenarios where one person says she pulled the trigger and her lawyer says she didn’t, and she just found the gun. The characters’ movements also give them distinct personalities. The colors and patterns help to narrate the scenes, and despite the simplicity of the style, it presented enough information to understand the story and characters.

Each dwarf in the film Snow White was made to look similar to each other, but each dwarf demonstrated their differences through their appearances and actions. The sleepy dwarf was designed to appear tired, so he has droopy eyes, eye bags, and a droopy face. His voice sounds crackly and weary. His body languages, such as stretches and yawns, will also reflect that he is tired. His voice sounded drowsy as if he had just woken up. The grumpy dwarf has a frown and furrowed eyebrows. His voice is raspy and deep. His behavior in the film also shows that he is upset, as he crosses his arms in the film.

Private Snafu used humor to make his point by demonstrating what not to do with your military guns. This was during WWII, so they demonstrate what could happen if your guns were not properly cleaned in a humorous manner. Throughout the story, they use voice and movement to convey humor. Private Snafu sings songs about his guns and wants to be a hero, but he can’t shoot any of his guns because he didn’t clean them properly, which is the moral of the story: clean your guns. They made private snafu short and scrawny, Whereas the Nazi appeared to be tall and bulky. When private snafu points a gun at him and he becomes intimidated and afraid. The movement of these characters is quite comical when Private Snafu points a gun at him and the nazi becomes intimidated and afraid, putting his hands up which ends up showing his belly, as his shirt becomes too short. The guns also react to not being clean, such as the machine gun melting due to overheating or the Cannon, which had creatures living inside singing about how unclean it was.

Ji Trnka’s short film “The Hand” was deemed subversive by the communist government because, in the film, the hand appeared out of nowhere and intruded into an artist’s home. The artist wanted to make a pot, but the hand only wanted him to make hand sculptures. When the artist defied the hand, the hand became violent and forceful, defying the artist’s wishes and capturing him to make more hands. It definitely demonstrated how far a communist would go to impose their views and values on someone, and simply watching that film would lead one to believe that communism is wrong and that no one should support it.

The short film I chose to write about is The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926).

I was immediately drawn to the film when I heard the inspiration for this film is from one of the stories in an Arabic book called 1001 nights which is a book I’ve read and loved and I was interested in seeing the inspiration within the film. The technique that was used in the film is what stood out to me the most because it was so artistically detailed.

-The person who created the animation

-The development of how the film was made

– techniques that were used

-Where the inspiration is from

-What happened after it was made and how it affected the film industry.

If I was an audience member at one of Gaspard Robertson’s “Fantasmagorie” shows in 1797, I would be reacting the same as everybody else In the room frightened and scared. All those people at that time weren’t really exposed to watching something so different on new media. This is all new to them and sometimes new things are scary even if they’re not going to hurt you. so, my reaction would also be the same terrified and afraid but after the emotions, I would be very curious since it got such a strong reaction from me.

I think a form of entertainment that would recreate the same emotions today would be the virtual reality headset. it’s such a new technology in today’s age and when you put on a VR headset everything is fake, but your mind will think it’s real. if you’re climbing a mountain or walking on the edge of a building in VR your brain will automatically think you are doing this in real life and you will end up swaying and becoming afraid.

My name is Ashley Kimbell and I’m majoring in studio art. I plan on going to a 4-year college so I can have a career as a storyboard artist and later on hopefully an art teacher. I love to play video games and roller skate whenever I have time. I also have one cat that I had for 13 years name Paco. I picked this course because of all the global studies and world culture classes this one was the most interesting and it related closely to my major. I also love animation so learning more about the process and taking a look inside animated film history seems like a fun experience.
