WEEK B ASSIGNMENT

YANGI – ETHICS

Shein is the company that I interact with lately. I love wearing trendy clothes that have a reasonable price. Shein is an international fast-fashion e-commerce platform that offers fashionable clothes, that are easily accessible to people who are on a budget. I go for fast- fashion when I am looking for affordable clothes. Shein was founded in 2008 and is one of the fastest-growing company

Shein claims that they are participating in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) which supports human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. Shein provides a framework that is good for our environmental sustainability and social influence. Shein supports small to medium businesses and has been investing in technology. They support new and upcoming designers and provide a platform to promote their designs.

I recommend that Shein do better at producing their product. I want Shein to provide better labor rights so they can provide a safe environment for the employees and try to do better for the people who work for them. I have seen Shein copy some designs from other companies or designers, and I hope they try to be original as they can be or at least provide some credits. I also want to add about their use of hazardous chemicals when they produce their clothes. They can do better at researching and manufacturing their products and focus on the safety of customers.

 Syeed Salvant- Ethics

Nike is a company that I interact with frequently.  The shoes I wear for the most part are manufactured by Nike, many of my clothes are also Nike. It is known that Nike in the past has been accused of using sweatshops and they’ve also been accused of using products that are detrimental to the environment which is way making a case for Nike as being a company that is ethical can be interesting but as time has gone by Nike has worked on improving the pay and working conditions of their employees and they are also heavily involved in Philanthropy, community service, and energy conservation.

According to Nike they want to ”protect the future of sport and our collective playground”. On their website they give information and statistics that will help inform you on things like the percentage of renewable energy in facilities that are operated by Nike.  Nike has also changed their purpose as a company and wants to prioritize diversity and building community. On the official Nike website it States “Our priorities include promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for all; advancing a transparent and responsible supply chain; innovating sustainable materials and methods of make that focus on our environmental impact; building community by investing in organizations focused on economic empowerment, and education and equality”. According to them this is their focus and it is a step in a great direction but Nike like all companies isn’t in the clear because of the positive changes they’ve made through the years. For Nike to make a true change they to permanently commit to the Worker Rights Consortium so that any accusations of sweatshops and unfair labor can be null and void and they should also incorporate their invention Flyleather® in more of their clothing because it is more ethical and saves energy

M.A.C Cosmetics

While I believe that the best beauty a woman can wear is her strong, kind, and fearless personality, I do also love good makeup. The first makeup I ever wore was M.A.C powder. Ten years later and it’s still my favorite powder. It has caused me to also fall in love with other M.A.C products such as their lipsticks. MAC cosmetics is an acronym for Makeup Art Cosmetics which was founded in Toronto in 1984 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. In 1996, M.A.C opened its headquarters in New York after becoming a subsidiary of Estee Lauder. Mac is now famous worldwide for not only the quality of its products but also for its beliefs which is stated in one of its slogans, “Since 1984, M.A.C cosmetics has established itself as the ultimate color authority with artistry at our roots, inclusion, and diversity at our core, and a commitment to conscious beauty and social responsibility at the top of our minds. With products sold in over 120 countries, it’s no wonder why makeup lovers always return Back-to-M.A.C”

Another famous slogan of theirs is, “All Ages, All Races, All Genders”. Their purpose goes beyond the products that they sell to the communities they serve and the planet we live on. They are ambitious about creating an impact, promoting acceptance, and inspiring change towards a better future. They have proven this by showing great philanthropy through the sales of their products. One such example is the sale of their VIVA GLAM Lipstick. The total cost of the lipstick when purchased ($19 dollars), will be donated to support women and girls, the LGBTQIA+ community, and people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. They have already raised $500,000,000 and counting from global sales. They have also donated over $20 million to programs in 57 countries, including South Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States. M.A.C’s non-profit AIDS fund program has now fallen into the third largest corporate donor to AIDS-related causes and is funded entirely by the sales of M.A.C’s Viva Glam lip products.

Viva Glam uses celebrity faces based on their ties to the cause. Since popular Baywatch star actress, Pamela Anderson, opened up publicly about hepatitis, their sales from VIVA Glam have had the biggest success. She said “I have hepatitis. No one should be ashamed of getting an illness” The company has given over $128 million to various STD-related projects, including $4.5 million for a prevention and treatment initiative in the Caribbean. The commitment to the cause keeps the company’s customers coming back for more MAC products and their employees from leaving the company. This is also a great strategy through a good cause to gain frequent customers and motivate employees to work.

M.A.C has also pledged to do good for our planet by continuing to improve the sustainability of its packaging. They are doing so through their program called Back-To-M.A.C. This program is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of their packaging by helping to reduce the amount of plastic in landfills. Upon returning six empty M.A.C makeup containers to a participating M.A.C counter or sending via mail, consumers can choose a standard M.A.C lipstick of their choosing as a thank you. This way the company can be able to reuse containers rather than have them go to waste.

Ethics are the moral principle or values that govern the conduct of an individual or a group. They are the rules and guidelines coupled with customs, principles, and traditions that guide a person or group to make the right decisions. M.A.C cosmetics has displayed ethics through various guidelines that they follow. They have proven their position on corporate and social responsibility by making sure their products are not tested on animals and ensuring that the packaging of their products is recyclable and mainly made from glass.

Ingredients used in M.A.C cosmetics undergo rigorous review to ensure that it is safe for customers. Not only are the ingredients safe but M.A.C is also transparent about the ingredients that are not included in their products. Some of these ingredients include Phthalates, Parabens, and more. This way the customers know for sure that their safety is important to MAC and will encourage them to continue to purchase their products.

M.A.C has proven that they are strong believers against cruelty and are big on treating their employees well. They also have high expectations which they make clear to their suppliers. “Our suppliers must comply with our Supplier Code of Conduct. The Code outlines our expectations on quality, health and safety, environment, labor conditions and human rights including our zero-tolerance policy regarding prisoners, slave labor and human trafficking.” They also have an ongoing audit process that includes the independent third-party assessment.

M.A.C is also strong in its beliefs towards racial equality. They believe in creating an equitable playing field for all races. Starting with their employees, the communities they live and work in, and through their makeup. They have created makeup shades for all skin tones, and they continue to work towards creating more varieties for people to choose from by partnering with creators from all races.

M.A.C talks about ethics and has defined it in many ways, they have fully shown social responsibility which is why many persons will continue to be a customer at M.A.C cosmetics.

However, just like every business, there is always space for growth and development. Finding the right shade of foundation and powder to match your skin is a task. You must know what your skin’s undertone color is to ensure you find the right color. The regular customer will not know this therefore picking out a shade online may be difficult. This causes a lot of people to guess and eventually lose interest in the product. Fenty beauty allows persons to arrange a virtual meeting on their website to speak to one of their representatives, who will guide you in finding the right shade. M.A.C does not have this option. Instead, they have pictures of the different shades of colors you must look at to choose from. This may not be accurate because the way a picture looks may not be the identical color of the actual shade. The time and process to guess what shade suits you which can end up being costly and inaccurate can discourage people from purchasing that product. They will eventually choose a product that is easier to purchase, especially those who may not have a store nearby and are purchasing online. I recommend that M.A.C start a similar process to help their customers or develop another strategy such as a video tutorial that shows various skin tones matched with different shades, in sunlight and at other times of the day. This may project a more realistic image of what the colour may look like on your skin.

Regina Mezit WEEK B POST

I chose my favorite Barnes&Noble store.  I chose this store because I can always feel the atmosphere of comfort, the smell of new, recently printed books and the opportunity to just sit and read any of the books.
Barnes & Noble began in 1873 when Charles M. Barnes started his book-selling business from his home in Illinois.  During the Great Depression, Barnes & Noble was first opened in New York on 5th Avenue.  This store has gained a worldwide reputation serving millions of customers with a wide selection of books from novels to scientific titles and textbooks, as well as medical books.
It is Barnes & Noble’s policy to conduct its business with the highest levels of integrity, ethics and compliance with the law.  According to their Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, which applies not only to employees but also to directors and senior officers, it covers a wide range of business practices and procedures.  The Code states that all employees must follow the highest ethical standards and make every effort to avoid inappropriate behavior.  Violation of the code is severely punished and may result in dismissal.
Despite the strict conditions, Barnes&Noble provides its employees with excellent benefits, such as: Medical plan, Prescription coverage, Dental plan, Vision discount plan, Healthcare flexible spending account (FSA), Healthcare spending account (HSA), 401(k) savings plan with  company match,Paid maternity and parental leave,Disability coverage,Life and accident insurance,Business travel insurance,Merchandise discounts (books, devices and accessories),Vacation and other paid time off,Tax-free transit program,Tuition reimbursement,Access to exclusive  Employee Assistance Program and WorkLife Services. When selecting employees, Barnes & Noble provides equal opportunities for all candidates, regardless of their status, position, origin and citizenship.  Barnes & Noble is a trusted partner for hundreds of colleges and universities across the country, committed to expanding sustainability practices on every campus they serve.
Barnes & Noble are proud of their commitment to fair labor practices and are committed to equal opportunity in all aspects of employment.  As a member of the Fair Labor Association (FLA), they ask that suppliers supplying goods to their stores comply with the FLA Code of Conduct.  This requires strict adherence to workers’ rights, including a ban on forced or child labor, a workplace free of discrimination, harassment, abuse, a safe and healthy work environment, respect for workers’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining, adequate compensation for overtime hours, and wages and benefits to employees in accordance with the law.
Their goal is to reduce the negative impact on the environment.  To align with school partners’ environmental goals and vision, their architects can help design LEED-certified buildings.  These “low-impact” stores may also have recycled flooring, eco-friendly carpets, non-toxic paint, mercury-free fluorescent lights, and eco-friendly retail fixtures made from recycled chipboard and non-toxic glue.
My recommendation for Barnes & Noble would be to support orphanages in education, young children without families need proper education and educational conditions.  I think support for orphanages where orphans live needs help from such large companies, especially when the company sells books and supports educational institutions.

Leila J Week B Post

The Company I decided to write about is the shoe company New Balance; it’s a famous sneaker brand that all generations love. And what this organization is doing now concerning corporate social responsibility is that they are close to being a 100 percent environmentally friendly company. By 2025 this Company will eliminate the use and discharge of harsh chemicals and source one hundred percent renewable electricity for owned operations. Another corporate social responsibility this Company is doing is what the product is made from and what it will make of it in the future. By 2022 the New Balance company products will be made with one hundred percent cotton, one hundred percent leather, and fifty percent recycled polyester.
The recommendations I have to create a more ethical, socially responsible, sustainable business is to make businesses have Corporate Social Responsibility of being environmentally conscious, such as lessening our carbon footprint. And Better human rights for labor policies. Plus, companies with inclusion tend to be more respected and superior due to their inclusiveness.
The practices I strongly recommend this organization should pursue are diversity and gender equality for all workers because there are still companies that lack these types of practices. In many other companies, Women are still being paid less than men, and People of the opposite race, white people, are also still being paid less than their counterparts. And this is a corporate social responsibility that needs to be addressed.

Week B – Ethics

Besnik Shakiri

MAR 100

Fall 2022

Today, I will get into the company Starbucks, and their social responsibility and ethical business principles. Firstly, what is Starbucks? Starbucks is an international corporation business chain, founded in the United States. Headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington, Where the company originated. Starbucks is known and admired for their craftsmanship in Coffee and beverages, that is why they are still a very relevant company since their small beginnings. There is a demand for quality coffee and they do their best to reach their consumers needs. For their ethical sourcing of manufactured goods, Starbucks has a requirement of suppliers of manufactured goods to comply on all health codes, laws, environment regulations and discrimination laws in each of their places of business. They as a company require suppliers to communicate with employees to uphold these standards. Starbucks has a zero tolerance for child labor as well as prison labor. It is important to them to be ethically sourcing their goods and having ethical labor be a strong support system of the company itself. Through time Starbucks has been target for not keeping their word that they don’t use child labor to gather their coffee. In a British documentary that focused on child labor in coffee farms, Starbucks was called out as one of the many companies using this unfair labor as part of their practice. Since these allegations had arisen, Starbucks has released several official statements that these speculations were simply horrific and untrue, and that child labor is not a part of the ethics of the company. They have a history of fair-trade production as well as supporting coffee farms in Guatemala for sustainable farming of coffee beans. They have made several commitments to ensure these practices stay safe and of regulation on these farms and continue to provide support to farmers in association with fair trade practices. Starbucks also has an ethical sourcing program, with scrutiny for continual improvement, as part of their practice and efforts to further continue ethical sourcing of product. The program C.A.F.E. that Starbucks is affiliated with has a zero tolerance against child labor and takes action to protect these practices at all cost.

As far as sustainability and social impact on the environment, Starbucks continues to stride for transparency with their practices and remain as sustainable as possible, always looking for room to improve. As an effort to cut down on the production of single use plastic and waste that ends up in landfills, The company has nixed the use of plastic straws for more sustainable options, as well as using recyclable materials in their cups and packaging to decrease their environmental footprint. After looking into the company more and it’s goals, I strongly agree with most of the things that they are doing to ensure their practices. I highly agree with the idea of zero plastic waste and the elimination of it. I would suggest to Starbucks to further continue their efforts to eliminate plastic in their cups and packaging and alternate to using recycled materials to further help retain sustainability and have a smaller impact of production on the environment.

Ethics – Chipotle

   Chipotle

To quote someone who said it best, “Chipotle is my life.” While that is a hyperbole, Chipotle has been my favorite fast-food restaurant for years. When I think of Chipotle, I think of delicious, high-quality, affordable fast food. In regards to ethics and sustainable business practices, you can say Chipotle has been ahead of the “trend”. The company’s previous slogan for many years was “food with integrity”. That slogan represented the company’s strategy for how it sourced and prepared its foods. At the time of the slogan (2001), the company prepared all its food on-site. They sourced their ingredients from suppliers who used human practices. This meant they worked with many smaller-sized local farms and with farmers who humanely raised their animals (no hormones, antibiotics)

Fast forward to over 29 years since the opening of the first Chipotle restaurant (1993), the company is still passionate and selective about the quality of ingredients they use. While the company has shifted away from its previous “food with integrity” tagline, they have kept the essence of the message with its new tagline “be real.” With over 3,000 restaurants nationwide, Chipotle’s be real is a slogan that celebrates and highlights the company’s commitment to using real ingredients. According to Chipotle, its restaurants only use 53 ingredients in their foods. They do not use ingredients with added hormones, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Their commitment to fresh ingredients isn’t solely just about the taste of their food, the company is also committed to sustainability. Brian Niccol, the company’s chairman, and CEO stated “I, along with the rest of the organization, strongly believe that how we grow our food is how we grow our future.” Chipotle to be transparent about its sustainability and impact releases sustainability reports which can be accessed on its website. Some highlights of their 2020 sustainability report include

  • investing 5 million to young farmers over the next 5 years
  • purchasing 31 million pounds of local produce (which is an investment of 23.3 million dollars which supports local food systems)
  • offering employees a debt-free degree program
  • donated 455,000 meals
  • donated over 5 million dollars to local community organizations
  • achieved a 51% landfill diversion rate
  •  Turned 11,840 cubic yards of waste into energy
  • Launched Real Foodprint, providing information to our consumers about how our supply practices can help influence various sustainability measures

What recommendations do you have for how to create a more ethical, socially responsible, and/or sustainable business? What practices do you recommend the organization pursue?

My recommendation for Chipotle to create a more sustainable business is to invest more in young farmers and smaller farms. Also, possibly creating programs that encourage and teach people how to farm. As chipotle continues to grow and open new restaurants, so will the demand for their food. That means if the company only relies on its current suppliers, there’s a great risk that its food supply will not meet the demand of its future customers. Which can put the company in an ethical dilemma, because they then might have to break away from their ethical code and start using suppliers who do not meet their standards. Investing in future farmers and smaller farmers ensures a future generation of farmers/farms producing quality ingredients that meet chipotle standards, ensuring that the company can keep up with future consumer demand.
