the Jones

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

Yes. Personal selling uses in-person interaction to sell products and services. The Jones are professional marketers who disguise embedded marketing as a daily routine: their clothing, accessories, furniture, and even food are carefully planned and stocked by various companies to create visibility in a desirable consumer market—so do their interactions with neighbors.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

The sales technique employed by the Jones—product placement, is similar to luxury card—Lamborghini (Huracán LP610-4) appeared and promoted in movie Dr. Strange by Marvel Studio in 2016.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

It’s not ethical. Any kind of misrepresentation is unethical, let alone the accompanying hidden agenda of making money when the neighbors invest their real emotions in the Jones.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?
  • I would feel they are cool and fancy people, after I found out everything is just pretense I would feel being fooled and cut ties with them.

Plufl

I would invest Plufl among those four product. The product concept is to bring people joy and comfort, a human-sized dog bed represents this concept vey well. It’s also the most useful comparing to the other three, especially for college students and young people–who has the culture of sleep over friends’ place after social gathering or party. Or for workers who isn’t financially well yet has busy schedule, on many occasions they crave comfort and short nap. The plufl is affordable, easy to carry and place on the floor–more convenient than set up a regular bed for visitors. It’s also a lot of fun and conveys a sense of optimism, that human compare themselves to dogs and self-deprecating. This branding is impressive enough since there has been no similar products by the time of this episode, and packaging is manageble. I believe if someone’s home has enough spaces for this bed and enjoys socializing, one would buy this bed. Maybe after purchase this bed, the buyers’ friends would want to sleep over for the sake of this cute bed! which is highly instagrammable.

Italian Restaurant Pick

If I moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and want to order Italian takeout, I would start to search on Google Maps. The search results will appear in order of rating starts from five to one. I will then take a closer look at what do top 5 ranked Italian restaurants offer. My favorite Italian food are some classic and authentic dish like lasagna, beef bourguignon with noodles egg, fettuccine noodles with mushroom and Tiramisu. Thus I will pay attention to which restaurant has the highest rated lasagna/beef bourguignon/fettuccine, or whether a restaurant has these food options at all. If there are multiple restaurants have those dishes with similar rating, I will then look for the pictures of interior environment of the restaurant on Google until I find the most clean one. Although I prefer delivery only, I still want my food being produced from a place with high hygiene standard.
Eventually I decided to choose Sicilia Mia, located at 4536 Highland Dr., Holladay, UT. This place seems to have the best Italian pasta with a variety of options. I don’t have price threshold. Local restaurants in Salt Lake City has reasonable prices.

SpaceX

The company came into my mind is SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk. I interacted with it regularly to the extent that I followed and commented on its Official Account on Twitter, because I dream of someday working there.

SpaceX should be considered high socially responsible and pursuing a big goal of making humanity “multi-planetary”. The first step is to make  rockets affordable and reusable. In terms of philanthropy, SpaceX’s satellite provided Ukraine free internet during wartime. The small, easy-to-use satellite dishes made by Musk’s private rocket company SpaceX have been universally hailed as a game-changing source of communication for Ukraine’s military, allowing it to fight and stay online even as cellular phone and internet networks have been destroyed in its war with Russia. SpaceX is one of the few companies that fulfill all those missions: philanthropy, energy conservation, sustainable supply chains, reducing carbon footprint(reusability of rockets), fair trade, community service, volunteerism.
