The Jones Assignment

• 1. Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?
Yes. I would categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling. The Jones used Guerilla marketing as their personal selling techniques; their tactic was undercover/stealth marketing. The Jones made sales off their interactions with the people around them, such as their neighbors, friends from school and their hairdresser. The Jones family were the sales representatives and served as the personal connection between the company’s products and the buyer. Another reason why I agree that the Jones family is an example of personal selling because most techniques for personal selling were used in this movie. Such as Sales presentations, conversations, demonstrations, retail selling, and reference selling. The Jones Family had parties to indirectly influence their community of their goods.

• 2. What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.
Some similarities that I see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of my favorite brands are sham events and direct marketing. In the movie Kate Jones went on a walk/jog around the neighborhood and she had on her nice sweatsuit and sneakers that she was promoting. The next day the woman in the neighborhood were wearing the dame thing. I was a part of this technique when I worked for Adidas in 2017. Every season we received a new uniform and sneakers while working there. The uniform and the sneakers were the latest from the collection at the time. We were able to up sale and silently promote the items we had on. We were also able to directly answer any questions or concerns a consumer had because we were using these items firsthand.
Another example from the movie is telemarketing. When Summer and her husband Larry were having the conversation about the bills and an ad for a new flat screen popped up on the computer screen. We have all experienced telemarketing from our favorite brands. From scrolling on any of our social media platforms and then an Ad from Adidas pops up.

• 3. Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?
Based on what I observed in the movie and what I read in the course materials from a business perspective I do think the way the products were marketed ethically. Guerrilla marketing is a risky and edgy marketing approach that uses combinations of different marketing communication tactics but in creative ways. We know that Guerilla marketing is not always “conventional” or “typical”, but it works. I am aware that someone was hurt in a car accident from the Jone’s products and that a man committed suicide, but those are the risk. I believe every company has risk. I can promote a Tesla today and someone can possibly get in an accident tomorrow. Every new product may have certain risk, and we can’t help whom abuses a product or how they internalize situations.
• 4. How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?
If I were friends with someone from the Jones family, I do think I would have fell a victim to wanting to keep up with the latest products that they had. I would have been eager to be around them and learn how I could obtain the things they had. After finding out their secret, I don’t think I would have been to upset. I understand this form of marketing on a business level, and when it comes to capitalizing sales, I believe in “whatever works” or “whatever it takes”.

Would you believe me if I said, “I’ve never watched an episode of Shark Tank.”? I really haven’t until this assignment, and I’m glad I came across this show. It has put a few things into perspective for me. I really loved two of the ideas in this episode. On a personal level I loved Ashley Jones “Tones of Melanin” clothing line. I am an African American student who aspires to further my education. I can only hope and pray I get accepted into an HBCU in my future. Ashley Jones inspired me, her business started small on her college campus, and she licensed to sell in at least 40 HBCUs. Her apparel is very fashionable, and a lot of her pieces are reversible which appears to give a consumer more bang for their buck. I also loved Ashley’s confidence and her energy as she was telling the Shark’s about her goods.

On a Business level I would have worked with Mark Singer and Kenzo Singer. “Eyewris” is an incredible idea. From working in nursing homes and just being around older people, I can’t tell you how many times they misplace their glasses or leave them home in important instances. Reading glasses are supposed to be quick and easy, a fast solution.

Mark and Kenzo describe “Eyewris” as wristwear that goes to eyewear and back to wristwear all in seconds. Their glasses are fashionable and convenient. This product fills the needs of those that are tired of misplacing their reading glasses. People who use glasses only to read are often taking the glasses on and off, because they are needed for one purpose and that is how they lose them. Now when they take off their reading glasses, they can just place it on their wrist until they need them again. This product makes it easier for the consumers that don’t like carrying a purse or backpack and can’t always carry their glasses and eyeglass case. This product will make reading on the go easier for of those in need. This idea was really innovative.

The glasses are smudge resistant, scratch resistant and impact resistant, which is very important for wearable eye wear. Any wristwear gets banged a often. The packaging and branding on this product is pretty unique. The frames come in a nice case for storing. The box is simple, with a white a black design. I was all around impressed and know there is a huge market to fill with “Eyewris”.

This week in Marketing 100 we discussed the importance and the different steps of “Consumer decision making. The different steps include identifying a need, searching for options, evaluating alternatives, deciding on what to purchase, and often we reflect on our purchase and decide whether or not we will stick this place or item.

Being in a new State, I need to find my boyfriend and I a fancy Italian restaurant in Salt Lake City Utah. Whenever we are visiting a new State, we love to go out every night and try new places although we had not seen targeted ads around our hotel. I am searching for a place with a nice ambience, good music and price does not matter. I would like for the place we choose to have a nice variety of drinks.

After I established my needs and wants for tonight’s dinner, I decided to run to google, Instagram, and yelp to do some searching. Google gave so many options. I narrowed the options down to 4, by checking how many stars they had. The first being Caffe Molise (4 ½ stars), Stanza Italian Bistro (4 ½ stars), Valter’s Osteria (4.6 stars), and lastly Italian Graffiti (4 stars).

After picking 4 restaurants that stood out to me, I began evaluating what these restaurants had to offer to my boyfriend and I. Caffe Molise offers live Jazz with the John Flanders’s on Friday nights. Caffee Molise is also reasonably priced. Stanza Italian Bistro offered a five course, prix-fixe dinner for &120 per person. Valter’s Osteria gave a very homely feel from the website and also mentioned that “Valter’s old favorites honed from his mother’s cooking to inventive new dishes highlighting seasonal specialties await you.”. The last restaurant to research was Italian Graffiti, Italian Graffiti was highlighted for their outdoor seating, romantic vibe, fine dining, and for their locally sourced ingredients. Pictures of the restaurant and food were very appealing.

That Night for dinner we decided to go with Italian Graffiti. From the pictures on Instagram and google, the ambiance was magnificent. The place was a little pricey but worth it. Their cocktails were amazing, my favorite was the Italian Ice Cocktail.

While doing this assignment I realize we use this process way more then we think. I am interested in purchasing a new Louis Vuitton bag and I can honestly say I have been doing the first 3 steps almost every other day, because I want the perfect bag. It is likely that my preferences may be the same as other consumers when looking for a good restaurant, or a new bag.
