I would consider the Jones’ family as a personal selling family. Based on the movie though confusing in the beginning I began to catch on how they are able to sell after their products. The wife and the children can be seen throughout the movie going out a lot, making new friends, and overall rubbing off on other people the ‘lifestyle’ they are trying to sell. The husband, Steve on the other hand in the beginning of the film can be seen not really able to make friends and find a group of his own to start selling. Throughout the film, we can start to see Steve come into his own friend group to get his percentage up. This goes on to show great examples of how the face to face tactic of personal selling can work great. The wife Kate with all the activities she was involved in, the first month she was up 20%.

Some similarities I saw in the sales tactic in the film compared to what I have seen in the brands I like are mostly within the cosmetics side of the sales. Through Kate in the hair salon or through the daughter in school showing all of her ‘friends’ the newest products in the locker rooms. This related to me or saw similarities within my experience because in the hair salon I will be getting my hair done and the hairstylist will start promoting a product that I should buy from them or accept them using it on me for an extra amount added to my total because they just thought it would make my already great hair from great to fabulous. The other one is not much so selling but I can see it from a brands perspective that word of mouth is great marketing for their products. Similar to a locker room when I was in high school the lunch room was prime time for all the girls to show what makeup products they are using and right after school head down to Sephora and pick up those exact same products, because if it works for my friend it definitely is going to work for me so why wouldn’t I.

Based on what I have read throughout the course I think the Jones’ family way of marketing is both ethical and unethical. I think it’s a mix because of course, it is a movie so it is going to show an extreme version of a situation for the purpose of entertainment. So on the one hand they are marketing in an ethical way just overall spreading the products to their friends and peers out of the ‘sheer’ fact that they ‘think’ it’s an amazing product. The other side of this is that it was not ethical at all because the son went so far as to give alcohol to minors at a party because he believed that ‘it’s his job’ to sell and promote the alcohol. Or even the sheer amount of things they are selling or even the lifestyle they are selling can cause some people to not be able to pay there home for that month or even months. And in extreme cases in the film deaths.

If I was friends with someone in the Jones’ family before I knew anything I would just think ‘Wow they really like talking about the stuff they have.’ I would honestly probably stop hanging out with them because I would just begin to feel like they are showing off to me and not really being thankful for what they have or more so being humbled about the things they have or better said the things they were promoting. After finding out their secrets I would think that it makes sense after them acting weird for so long. But I would start to feel bad for them they couldn’t really live a real life and feel happy for the stuff they would enjoy if they got if they didn’t get everything they wanted in the ‘real world’.

About Glossier: Glossier is a makeup company founded in 2014. The slogan of the company is ‘Skin first, Makeup second’ which is their philosophy as well. They really bring that philosophy into how they formulate their products. Such products as the cloud paint, balm dotcom, and the stretch concealer which all three examples give just the right amount of product and pigment for the confidence to be gained of adding an extra bit of something to the skin but still having that remainder of your true skin peeking through. The company also has made a big leap throughout the years going from strictly e-commerce, to having one storefront in Manhattan, to global store fronts, to being in one of the biggest makeup distributors, Sephora.

Product concept assignment

In season 15, episode 2 of Shark Tank, the pitch that really resonated with me was ‘Matador’. Matador was a men’s modest activewear line that mostly specialized in leggings. Leggings really connected to me because I wear them all the time, to be exact, I have 13 pairs. After going through countless pairs I have found my favorite pair are the high compression hugger leggings from Arie, so you can say I know a thing or two about what makes a good pair of leggings, a good pair of leggings. I never actually knew there was a market for men’s leggings because I have always know or thought that men mostly wear the compression under-layer and then they wear shorts or sweatpants over top. But when the pitcher Valentine started explaining why it is a good idea, I started following along because it was all the same reasons I love leggings.

The product as explained to the sharks was a modest activewear for men. The product fills the gap for men that want that feel of leggings without having to layer anything on top, and to not compromise their modesty. As Valentine explained that he was becoming a yoga instructor, and in an active setting it is much easier to not be restricted in your movements within your clothing, so to have something that feels like a second skin like the Matador leggings does help a lot. But not only for people in an active setting but also in everyday life because compression is proven to help blood flow which helps people such as stay at home dads and other professions that help you to be on your feet. Valentine was explaining to the sharks that he was looking for 250k in return hell give 10%, it cost him $18.00 and he retails them for $92.00 which is almost a 410% markup, but then that creates a decently good margin. Consumers of the product or people that are thinking of consuming the product will feel the need to participate in purchasing it because the man demographic based of the pitch being men, will see that they don’t have to compromise the feel of compression and movement no longer when they see that they can get both those affect, as well as not having to expose their little johnnies to the gym or the public eyes. Some extra add-ons to the article of clothing include a pocket, zipper pocket and a little loop to hold a t-shirt or towel.

Now based on what we have learned throughout the semester that Valentine is selling a good to the consumers. He is using feeling and experience to convey his point on why you need to buy this product. Through these experiences and explaining the feeling that the leggings create make the consumer think about the times men were self conscious about themselves but didn’t want to compromise their activities, so they just pack on the layers to save themselves of their overthinking brains thinking ‘Am I showing too much? I don’t feel stable. I don’t feel comfortable. Should I just put on the shorts and call it a day?’ which creates a connection between the product and themselves, this then creates the sales through the magic of marketing. Out of the four P’s the place is the kicker for me. He works strictly through e-commerce. Theoretically it would be a good idea, since most of the typical men that I grew up around would much rather order something online rather than going in person. But, based off those same men that I grew up around I also can see how much they spend when they are put in the setting of a Jd sport, Footlocker, Models, or a Dicks sporting goods where these stores sell a variety of brands that Valentine would be able to sell an abundance of product, especially sense he has a unique product.

All in all I think Valentine’s pitch was great but I do think he messed up when he said he has no target audience and ‘wants people to copy’ his idea. Really doesn’t come off as confident in knowing that your product is one of your own. If he just owned the fact that he caters to men and their athletic needs then it’s a starting point from which he can grow from.
