The Joneses & Personal Selling

The Joneses was a very deep, introspective movie that included an extreme form of personal selling. Personal selling is using in-person interaction to sell products and services. Though posing to be a normal family, the Jones family is a group of sales representatives who directly interact with their community to promote certain products and services. They exemplify how conversations, (seemingly) organic demonstrations, and field selling of different products can lead to a ripple effect of consumer trends. One specific scene stood out to me the most; KC told Steve that the goal was for their neighbors to want to be them and not just want to buy what they have. This resonated with me because I recognize that is the appeal of companies using social media influencers to help sell their products nowadays. Often, influencers advertise new clothes and services to entice others to buy the products as well. Personally, I do not find the ways in which products were marketed to be ethical. All of the members of the family exploited the mental and emotional vulnerabilities of their neighbors. However, it is questionable how is truly at fault: the sales representatives, the company they worked for, or consumer culture in the U.S. Regardless, Larry’s final scene of him dying with his material possession spoke volumes on how our obsessions ultimately controlled his emotional well-being. Currently, we invest our emotions and identity into material possessions that have no greater worth than temporary importance. I don’t know if I would be friends with someone out of the Jones family. Before knowing, I would assume they had a spending addiction because of their constant wave of new products in their possession. Though afterward, I would feel similarly to how I do now; I would feel sorry for them because they need to exist in a fantasy world to escape the realities of who they are.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

I consider the way the Jones family lives as personal selling because they sold all their products and  services by gaining the customers trust. They invited people into their life and gained their trust therefore the customer trusted the products and services.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

The Jones family like many brands used a an individual’s popularity to sell items that might not sell well on their own. When the Jones family had a party in their home they were able to sell frozen food to people who normally wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s like W.H.O. using celebrities in commercials to get people to get vaccinated.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I do not feel the the Jones family marketed their products ethically. They had no real attachment to the products. They barely used most of it. They said and did whatever they had to just to make a sale.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I think I would understand. I work retail and gave false compliments to make a sale. However,  I did nothing as extreme as the Joneses. They were salesmen trying to sale products. They were doing a job. However, I would be a little upset I was lied too.

Joneses Unit 13

Good day

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

I think the Jones family used the personal selling technique to their advantage, because they persuasion their customers to thinking they needed something when they might have not, also they did it so well they did not need to pressure their customers into buying it.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

Some similarities I would say is which Apple uses do they do not necessarily need much advertising but once the latest model of IPHONE comes out, I am surrounded by people who have it and this makes me want those latest features and accessibilities when it comes to having the top of the range.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I do not think that the way they went about it was ethical because with them having all these latest products this caused their neighbors feeling pressure to do the same even when they did not have the money. If they were transparent that they worked in sales would have led to a different outcome, but they sold a fake narrative.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I would not be friends with anyone in that family, because they not true to who they were firstly and secondly, they did not have the needs of the customer at hand rather than just getting their sales up.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?
    • Yes, I would consider the Jones family lives as personal selling because before trying to sell a product they try to create a bond with the person or a group of people.
  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.
    • The market to a certain demographic, for example Steve markets to the rich white men in the area by finding a common interest which is golf.
  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?
    • No I do not think it is ethical because there is a thick layer of lies and deception, they are not truthful with their words.
  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?
    • I would definitely question whether or not our friendship was real, also their morality and ethics. To what extent are they willing to go and to make money? Is there a line they wouldn’t cross?

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

I would categorize the Joneses family as completely personal selling. The Joneses have a unique and sales-driven approach of marketing their products, but they do so face-to-face, which allows them to optimize their sales figures and earnings. They had a highly effective method since, for one thing, the family had the most recent items and just needed to work with persuasion and promotional features to entice clients to acquire the product.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

The connections I notice between the Jones family’s sales practices and the marketing tactics used by some of my favorite businesses are compelling. And the personal selling strategies they employ include talks that create connections and demonstrations that illustrate how a product works and the benefits it provides.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I believe that the way in which things are advertised in this film is immoral, because this type of marketing is carried out on people who are unaware that they are being marketed to. Their sales proposals are accepted passively by consumers. Customers should have the option of accepting or rejecting sales efforts.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

When considering whether or not to buy a thing, I don’t allow other people influence my decision. They didn’t do much damage. The majority of the negative outcomes that certain characters experienced were the result of their own choices. The Joneses are not to blame.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

Yes, I would categorize the way the Jones Family lives as personal selling because the sole reason for the family to make connection by interacting with other is to market their products.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

The similarities that I see in the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of my favorite brand is the way they try to convey the customer by demonstrating  the benefit of the  knowing that would attract the customers attentions.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

Based on what I read in the course materials and what I observed in this movie, I don’t think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical because they Jones Family are not being truthful to the customers. they are using a tactics that can make for sell and benefits for themselves.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I would feel disappointed and betrayed if I were friends with someone in the Jones Family before I found out their secret since their reason is to sell me products by lying to me instead of being generous and really offering someone that can benefits me.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

Yes, because one of the main reasons people/friends bought the product they were advertising was because they saw the Joneses as a successful family and wanted to imitate that. They wanted to look/be successful too, just like them.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

A good example is how clothing brands use rappers or athletes for advertising their products. They make them use their clothes, shoes, or equipment because they know a certain audience would like to be like that artist/athlete, which will lead to them getting that product.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

This is a very tough question because even though they lied about being family, that didn’t mean that the products they were advertising weren’t of high quality. And they never forced anyone to buy the product. It was up to their friends to make that decision. A good example is the golf equipment. Steve was really good at golf. When he advertised the equipment he used, his friends improved too, which had nothing to do with him having a real family.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

To be honest, it would not make a huge difference if I knew or not their secret. I don’t let other people influence me when deciding whether I should buy a product or not. They didn’t cause any serious harm. Most of the bad consequences some characters faced were due to their own decision-making. The Joneses should not be responsible.

“The Joneses “

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?
  • I would characterize the Joneses family as personal selling, one hundred percent. The Joneses at a unique and sale-driven way of selling their products but using the face-to-face method which is allowed them to maximize their sales numbers and profits. They had a very effective way because for one the family had the newest of products and just had to work with the persuasion and promo details to lure the customers into buying the product. Honestly, the strategy they used is amazing not only that but the fact that they work as a team to help build one another to get the numbers skyrocketing.
  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands?
  • Give an example. I see very similar tactics such as doing everything possible to get the sale. One thing I realize is that the sexual content and the romance between the parents were something that helped bring in the gentlemen to buy products that were being sold by Mr. Jones. Let’s get back to the point that they used tactics such as marketing campaign, figuring metrics, creativity, targeting the correct demographic, Ideal location. The joneses explored every single one of these tactics and made it better, they always found a way to improvise. The family was great at selling amazing pitches and creating that repour with clients and the community that they have built.
  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?
  • Yes, because they used very traditional face-to-face selling methods, but it was used in very unconservative ways, but it was still ethical. I do believe that they could have fixed the rate at which they were persuading people because, at the end of the show, someone lost their life because of falling for all the joneses’ tricks and new gadgets. Overall, I do believe that it was ethical, and the family just had the right coaching and a very good strategy when it came to their promotion and product pitches.
  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?
  • I would feel no way because I understand that everyone must make their money. I do agree with others that it is very hard to be fooled by your neighbors and find out that they have no real family ties. However, from a business standpoint, I understand, and I am not mad or have feelings towards the way they decided to operate as a family business. I truly would want to learn some of their, marketing, planning, and promotion strategies seeing that I am into business entrepreneurship myself.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

In the way the Jones family lives, I don’t categorize it as personal selling. There are a lot of ways to convince customers to buy your product, and it should be under the rule of promoting with a clear description of the product and transparency, so it can protect the customer’s freedom of choice. In the case of the Jones family, they have been using deception and cunning, which is illegal. They have been creating such scenarios to get close to people by pretending that they are friends with them, while they have been using them for business purposes only.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

I would say, since I’m a fan of soccer and my favorite player is Lionel Messi, he uses adidas cleats for his sports games. However, that emotional strategy the company uses gives me the feeling that when I wear those cleats, I feel like I have unlimited skills and I can perform well on the pitch, which is the same strategy that the Jones family has used with sports equipment. They have been performing well in sports, so they can easily promote those products to their customers. Also, the same strategy has been applied to different products by choosing the right time and the right place.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I don’t think the way they advertised such things to people was ethical since it was based on deception; they took advantage of people’s compassion and innocence in order to profit from them. Promoting a product has its own set of rules and notions that must be followed, but the family failed to do so. However, I admired how quickly they made contact with people and how they turned their family into the center of the town, so that anyone could talk about them and their lifestyle, which reminds me of a scene in the movie where KC said to Steve, “The purpose of selling is not to sell things, it is to sell lifestyle and attitude,” and this strategy is what companies use to promote their products by using influencers and celebrities, so that the customer will believe that they belong to them. But the truth is that all of this is a lie, and the last part of the film, when that person dies because he couldn’t afford the house payment, clarifies how severe the consequences can be even though this trend is spreading widely in our society, especially among teenagers, who believe that those on social media have such a good life, and they try to imitate them by paying for stuff that will not add any value to their lives.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

I’m going to feel bad about it; being used for business purposes is a disappointing thing that can happen to someone, especially when you accept that person as a member of your family, but in the end, you discover that all of your feelings for that person have faded and nothing of that was real; I’ve had that experience before, and it has changed a lot of my attitudes toward people.

The Joneses

  • Would you categorize the way the Jones family lives as personal selling? Why or why not?

Yes, because their initial reason for interacting with anyone or becoming friends with the people around them was for them to advertise and market everything they had in order to make sales.

  • What similarities do you see between the sales tactics the Jones family employs and the marketing tactics of some of your favorite brands? Give an example.

The similarities that I saw between the Jones’ family sales tactics and marketing tactics of some of my favorite brands would be that they show examples of how the product would make certain things better for us. For example, we see commercials of people using the products and how they would benefit our day to day life.

  • Based on what you read in the course materials and what you observed in this movie, do you think the way products are marketed in this movie is ethical?

I think that the way the products were marketed in this movie were not ethical because they were lying the whole time and they made others feel as if they were not as successful as them and possibly failing in life because they could not maintain the same lifestyle.

  • How would you feel if you were friends with someone in the Jones family before you found out their secret? What about afterward?

If I was friends with the Jones family before finding out their secret I would want to know more about how they became so successful, and possibly would be interested in learning from them. After finding out, I would feel betrayed.
