Learning Goals
This week, we are going to focus our attention on literature reviews, which are a critical step in any research project– and the next step in your project. To do this, we will:
- Learn about the goals and methods of conducting a literature review
- Review and analyze sample literature reviews, paying attention to their methods
- Begin research for our literature reviews
Read
First, read the following:
+ Read at least two of the following sample literature reviews:
- Ledesma and Calderon, “Critical Race Theory in Education”
- Brandth, “Gender Identity in European Family Farming”
- Guilamo et al., “Parental Influences on Adolescent Sexual Risk Behaviors”
- Iconis, “Rape Myth Acceptance in College Students”
For each literature review, answer the following questions:
- What is the thesis, research question, or problem that the literature review addresses? (What is the purpose of the literature review?) Be specific- quote the article.
- What do the authors do? What type of literature do they review? Do they review literature in a particular field or discipline?
- What does the literature review find? You may want to look at how it is organized (e.g. headings) to analyze the different themes or areas of information that the review contains.
- What are the gaps or next steps, according to the author?

For this week’s post, please analyze the two sample literature reviews you read. For each literature review, answer the following questions (same as above):

- What does the literature review find? You may want to look at how it is organized (e.g. headings) to analyze the different themes or areas of information that the review contains.
- What are the gaps or next steps, according to the author?
Work on Final Project
- Read the instructions for the Literature Review and prepare at least one annotation to turn in– due Tuesday 10/13! There is a sample annotation linked in the instructions.
- Set up appointment with BMCC Librarian, if needed, to learn how to use the Library databases. For more help with library resources, chat one-on-one with a librarian on the Library’s website (https://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/library/) or schedule an appointment with a librarian (https://bmcccuny.libcal.com/appointments).
