The C.S. Lewis phrase, “Literature adds to reality; it does not simply describe it,” refers to how literature deepens your life and helps you develop the necessary abilities that life offers you. This idea is evident throughout Toni Cade Bambara’s novel “The Lesson.” In the tale, Silvia and these other underprivileged children were found by a black woman named Miss Moore, who decided to take them to a toy store. A yacht was on the kids’ shopping list, but they decided it was too expensive. Following that, Miss Moore continues by explaining to the students how people earn their money by working hard and refraining from starting a burglary. This illustrates the disparity between those who have access to privileges and those who do not in terms of their life.
