By looking at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Fredrick W. Smith, and LeBron James’s lives, a common story appears. This story shows that leadership is often made, not just given. Each of them had difficulties during their early lives. Ocasio-Cortez grew up as an immigrant in a working-class family and overcame personal setbacks like her father’s death in 2008. Instead of taking the path that was set out for her, she decided to serve the public and made waves in politics. Smith’s journey, which was marked by health problems, took him from Yale to starting FedEx, which changed the shipping industry in a big way. LeBron could have become a statistic because he was raised by his single mother in difficult circumstances. Yet, he used his skills to become a basketball legend.

Not only are they strong, but they are also dedicated to making the world a better place. Whether it’s Ocasio-Cortez’s passionate support for the environment through the “Green New Deal,” Smith’s creative way to improve lives through FedEx, or James’s foundation to help the less fortunate, each has used its platform for the better good. Their areas of influence may differ, politics for Ocasio-Cortez, business for Smith, and sports for James. But each of them made their mark by taking a different road and overcoming different challenges and successes.

Looking back, it’s obvious that their paths shaped them into the leaders they are today. They were born with some natural abilities, but their decisions and experiences made them who they are. This proves that leaders aren’t just born, but are made through life’s obstacles.

        Hi Rotem,

I completely agree with your post. Both Lebron and AOC had “paths” set out for them that they refused to follow. They actively worked against their odds and obstacles to become successful and powerful leaders. Lebron could have easily become a statistic; young boys being raised by single-mothers often produces a similar statistic. Instead he focused on basketball and it made him a legend.

Hi, Rotem, I agree with your perspective. I believe that a leader’s abilities are mostly developed through nurturing and cultivation. While there might be some factors influenced by the personality genes inherited from their parents, most of the choices made during their growth are determined by them. This gradually shapes them into becoming more outstanding individuals.

It is clear from their willingness to overcome obstacles and make constructive contributions to society that leadership is, in fact, a result of one’s experiences and decisions.

What these 3 individuals have in common is that they all have overcome very difficult times in their early lives and used that to succeed today. AOC grew up up in a working class family, lost her father, and had to find a job while in school to help her family. Now, she is a U.S House of Representatives leader speaking up for her community. LeBron James grew up in a household with just one parent. And became one of the greatest athletes and also a voice for other. Fredrick Smith overcame Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome, a potentially crippling disease. He then founded one of the largest express delivery companies in the world.

What I notice that’s different is Fredrick Smith’s father was a very successful businessman. So, most likely had a great foundation to start on. While LeBron and AOC grew up opposite situations that Frederick Smith.

I think leaders are made because your struggles and achievements throughout your life will show other how you built on to become a leader.

        Hi Hamidou,

I agree that Frederick Smith was the difference between all three leaders. Given that he had an example to follow (his father), he was more likely to be successful. He likely knew the ins and outs of business, making it a bit easier to come up with the concept of FedEx. I also think that because he was able to recover from a potentially crippling disease, he felt like he was given another chance at life and wanted to make the most of it.

I also think that leaders are built and not born. In fact, I believe that the struggles and obstacles we overcome in life make us who we are and empower us to continue our journey. Reflecting on the three characters, I believe that the individual struggles they experienced have helped them to develop their unique skills and develop their leadership skills.

While reading the biographies of these three successful individuals, one common theme stood out. They all overcame adversity with persistence and dedication. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grew up in the Bronx with a regular, working-class family. She left her hometown to go to Boston University and when she graduated she returned and began her career in politics. The 2008 recession and the death of her father put a dent in her progress, but it did not stop her. Lebron James grew up in a single-parent household, where his mother struggled to make ends meet. He developed a love for basketball at an early age and perfected this hobby, breaking multiple records. It eventually makes him one of the highest earning NBA players. Frederick Smith was the son of a successful businessman that suffered from Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome. But despite this diagnosis, he recovered and later went on to start FedEx.

These three individuals were given the same twenty-four hours as their peers while also having some odds against them. They made the decision to perfect their crafts/interests and pursue success. The only difference that stood out was Frederick Smith. His father was a successful businessman, so he likely had a blueprint and motivation to also enter the business field. It worked out well for him.

I believe that leaders are made. No one’s childhood looks exactly the same; we all experienced different realties. Given that, individuals make a conscious decision to either rise above and make a difference or follow the crowd.

I think you mentioned an interesting point. We all do get the same twenty-four hours as each other. There many individuals that don’t know what to do with the given time. I think success is mainly based on resources available, but it can happen as long as people apply themselves. If the individual never applies themselves there wouldn’t be any progress made in any way. Each of these individuals have applied themselves into their goal. I think each of us are on our own journey to success.

Even though they’re from different areas, AOC, Smith, and LeBron have something in common: they didn’t let challenges stop them. They proved that leaders don’t all look the same or come from the same backgrounds. They show us that anyone can be a leader if they work hard and believe in themselves. AOC is known for her strong political beliefs, Smith for his business success, and LeBron for his sports skills. This shows that leadership can show up in many forms. It’s not just about leading in politics or business. You can also lead by using your voice or talents to make a difference. These three individuals illustrate that leadership is a blend of inherent attributes and nurtured skills. While they may have possessed certain innate qualities conducive to leadership, their dedication to growth, flexibility, and ongoing learning played a pivotal role in their accomplishments. This implies that effective leadership can be cultivated through continuous education and embracing new challenges.

        Hi Amr,
Well done! I think you did a great job explain how different yet similar all of these leaders are. I agree I also believe that leaders aren’t born a certain way and that they are made. These leaders are all strong people who has dealt with life’s challenges being thrown at them but instead of giving up they continued to push through and fight to see better days. Their fight and their drive are what makes them good leaders because they continued to prove that when times get hard, they keep on going and I believe that is some of what it takes to be a good leader because their life’s challenges may be a part of their struggle, but it is also why they became strong leaders in the first place.

A common thing these Individuals have is they all had struggles growing up , Alexandra’s father had passed away but she still strived. Fredrick had an illness and Lebron was raised by a single mother in a working class. All though they had struggles they still strived and became someone in life . They demonstrated that anyone can be someone important in life , no matter your race, gender or background.

Something that is different is how Fredrick had someone in his life who was a great leader which was his father , he had already owed businesses . Fredrick had an idea on how businesses were managed and how to run one.

Personally I feel like Leaders are made , its always up to you to decide what path you want to take. The struggles that someone goes through is the way they decide to interpret it.

What I notice as different is their respective domains of achievement.: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frederick W. Smith and Lebron James have all influenced their chosen field. To begin with, Alexandria renowned for her innovative ideas in politics, she became famous through her election’s victory, and worked by helping the society with new rules. Moving on, Frederick W. Smith achieved recognition in the business world by owning FedEx to make the delivery of things easier around the world. Lastly, Lebron James made himself a king in the NBA sport, and he is known as one of best players ever.

What do they have in common: regarding those three notable figures, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frederick W. Smith, and Lebron James all suffered before they became famous. Especially Frederick who overcame a serious crippling disease, and the important amount of money he lost because of the rising fuel costs. Alexandria, too, who became famous due to her incredible ideas in politics also suffered throughout her journey to success. When she went back home, her family and she encountered serious financial issues after her father passed away in 2008 from cancer. She ended up taking low salary restaurant jobs. Likewise, Lebron James, one of the best players of all time, had several injuries in his career such as his back and knee problem in 2014-15, a strained left groin, an abdominal strain, and general swelling in 2018-19.

What stands out about these people is their shared ambition for future success, and their incredible contribution in their field.
The real question is whether Leaders are born or made I personally agree that leaders are born, that is a quality we are born with and develop through life. For example, Lebron James, who was tall enough, physically and athletically strong since he was young, soon recognized his potential that he could make a great career in the NBA, and he pursued it. Another example is that most of the world’s top Brazilians best soccer players in the world did not go to school to learn, they were born and grew up with the exceptional quality of playing soccer. On top of that, I personally know a lot of leaders who have been chosen to be a leader because of their natural qualities based on the way they talk, they act, they behave with people around them, not everyone who studies leadership can succeed.

Hi, Aboubacar Traore. Your analysis is excellent; they all went through various setbacks and managed to overcome them, making their ultimate achievements even more valuable. However, I still believe that leaders are gradually nurtured over time. Even though a portion of their personalities is determined by genetics, a person with innate talent who doesn’t put in the effort might be replaced or surpassed. I’ve seen many capable and talented individuals in life, but their inner fragility leads them to be constantly influenced by others’ opinions, ultimately causing them to become ordinary. Therefore, I think we can focus on nurturing certain aspects of ourselves after birth, gradually moving closer to becoming the individuals we aspire to be.

People have questioned themselves in what ways we can change the world around us, what can we do to be better leaders and teach the path of greatness, It comes within an individual or many to become effcient and leave behind a ever changing cause for humanity to enduring and cherish for one’s achievement or creation.

LeBron James, Frederick W. Smith, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are connected by their status as leaders. Their success stories demonstrate how leadership can be honed and developed. They both possess a fierce desire to bring about change and overcome obstacles in their respective fields. Each of them has become well-known by grabbing chances, developing their abilities over time, and honing their skills. Their proficient communication skills are evidence of how they have grown and developed key leadership qualities. What stands out about these individuals is how they have harnessed their diverse strengths to excel in various domains. AOC’s rapid ascent in politics, Smith’s pioneering innovations in business logistics, and LeBron’s mastery of sports. That shows  leadership is adaptable and multifaceted, their impact resonates not from innate traits alone, but from their continuous learning and growth. While they share a made leadership journey, their differences arise from the unique paths they’ve taken. AOC’s political activism, Smith’s entrepreneurial endeavors, and LeBron’s athletic achievements emphasize that leadership emerges differently based on context and individual inclinations. Their diverse backgrounds exemplify that leadership isn’t confined to one mold. That’s why I think leaders are made through experience and harshness in life.

From reading the story of Alaxandria cortez, Frederick smith and Labron james, we can see that all of them came from backgrounds that weren’t quite in favor of the positions they are in right now. Alexandria had to struggle financially and take up the responsibility of her family from a very young age, when her father died in 2008. Frederick smith was diagnosed with a health disorder, that if continued to his adult life, would not have made it possible for him to open fedex. Labron grew up with a single parent who was struggling to find a stable job and stable housing. Despite all their adverse background all three had chosen to overcome them and influence society in positive ways in some ways or the other. Alexandra became a public representative to advocate on behalf of the public, frederick went on to establishing fedex, Lebron opened up charity funds from his basketball earning to help out children and single parent families. They all have chosen to serve the public for the good, despite their adverse backgrounds making it very difficult for them to do so. The only noticible difference among them was their different racial//ethnic background.
From the above facts obtained, we can quite plausibly conclude that leadership is attained through a combination of biological factors and overcoming the challenging experiences in life, which all three of the above-mentioned figures went through.

After reading the background stories of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frederick W. Smith, and Lebron James, something that I realized that they all have in common is the fact that they have all faced many life challenges which could have been a setback for them, but they all decide to keep on going. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez grew up in a Puerto Rican working-class household and when her father passed from cancer she had to help and take on multiple low-wage restaurant jobs to help her family stay afloat. Now she is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. As a teen Frederick W. Smith suffered from Legg-Calve- Perthes Syndrome which is a potentially crippling disease. However, he was able to recover and as he got older, he went to study at Yale where his ideas about overnight delivery services began. Now he owns a very successful delivery service known as FedEx. Lebron James grew up with a single mother who had him when she was a teen, but he never let their challenges get in the way of becoming great because now he is a famous NBA star winning championships and breaking records. The fact that they all decided for themselves to not let life’s challenges or setbacks get in their way and they all decided to keep on working hard and doing what they love to reach their goals shows us how they all became great leaders today.

There’s only one major difference I realized about these leaders and it’s the fact that they all have different kinds of backgrounds, and all had different types of opportunities available to them. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Puerto Rican female, and Lebron James, an African American male both came from struggling families who tried their best to raise them with what they had. Frederick W. Smith, a white male who also had his struggles but had more of an opportunity to learn from a businessman because he grew up with a very successful father which probably helped him learn more about business. His father founded Dixies Greyhound Lines and many other ventures.

After learning more about these successful leaders, it is very clear to me that leaders aren’t born instead they are made. They are made by having a strong foundation beside them to help them grow especially when they are in need. They also are made after life’s challenges seem to almost get the best of them, but they continue to fight back and overcome so they can continue to push and encourage themselves to be who they want to be and fight for what they believe in.

        Hi Tamala,

I agree with your post. All three examples of leaders that these guys give are very different from one another. Their backgrounds are completely different from one another, including race, sex, ethnicity, and culture. Also, their stories, while similar, are still completely unique to their individuality. What ties them all together was the motiviation they had to be successful and get to where they are today. Good job!

        Hi Tamala!

You’ve nailed the essence of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frederick W. Smith, and LeBron James. Despite their challenges, they all moved forward, which is impressive. The idea that leaders are shaped, not born, is strong. Their resilience and choices define them. Your insight about foundations and overcoming obstacles is on point it’s a vital part of their journeys. their stories encourage us to recognize our leadership potential. It’s about embracing strengths, learning from setbacks, and relentlessly pursuing goals, as they did. They show that leaders emerge through hard work and refusing to let circumstances hold them back.

In comparing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Frederick W. Smith, and Lebron James, they all joint a identical go-getter stance and have processed hard to score their current positions and stretch to be disciplined on account of facet. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez arose humble origins, a young Puerto Rican mother from the Bronx turned Congresswoman. Perseverance, ardor, and government created the in the past bar server into the most budding she always decided into Congress. Frederick W. Smith is another example of courage and perseverance. Medical disappointments in welcome early ages nor unsuccessful millions in welcome first age of chance Fedex acted not stop Mr. Smitch into creating individual of the best, familiar transportation & publication services about the experience. Lastly, Lebron James, arguably individual of the greatest basketball performers of continually. I given continue to specify his continually course stats, but Lebron James is frequented or used by travelers for welcome discipline and focus. He was driven from welcome early Highschool Basketball days and still welcome occupancy on the court is impressive and his accomplishment is authentication of it. While the course selections of these heads are all fundamentally various, all three of these rulers explain what thickness and dedication to your skill be able manage you.

Having understood the life backgrounds of Alexandria, Frederick, and LeBron James, it becomes evident that they all faced setbacks during their childhood or adolescence. Through learning about their experiences, I have confirmed that leaders are developed through nurturing rather than being innate. Alexandria possesses a strong sense of purpose and courage; she knows precisely what she wants to contribute to society. This fearless attitude allows her to confront competitors and opposition from both parties. Frederick effectively applies the knowledge he gained to his entrepreneurial pursuits and is unafraid to experiment. His passion for aviation, which he carried from his earlier years, was integrated into his founding of FedEx, envisioning it as a seamless integration of airplanes and trucks. While initial attempts led to substantial losses, around 30 million dollars due to rising fuel costs, he did not give up. Instead, he sought solutions to his predicament, which eventually led to his company’s profitability. LeBron James encountered skepticism and distractions from external sources but ultimately triumphed through his self-discipline and abilities, clinching numerous MVP titles.

In summary, Alexandria, Frederick, and LeBron James excel not only due to their exceptional skills but also because of their formidable resilience in the face of adversity and their determination to rise whenever they stumble. Although a small portion of these abilities might stem from their genes, the majority are cultivated through their post-natal choices and experiences, gradually forming their unique approaches to accomplishing tasks, thereby leading to their success. Consequently, I believe that leaders can be developed through nurturing and cultivation rather than being inherently born as leaders.

I agree where you said that all three of them managed to overcome adversity and decided to rise. All three of them had strong faith in their actions and the good that it will bring to society. They put trust in their own voices instead of the down lifting voices of their critics, which eventually led them to succed and help others.

Hi, Jingtong, your take on how adversity and tenacity mold leaders like Alexandria, Frederick, and LeBron James is absolutely correct. Their tenacity and dedication, along with the challenges they’ve faced, highlight the crucial importance of nurturing and personal development in the development of leaders. It is clear from your perspective that leaders are created through their life journey rather than just by virtue of inherent traits.

Given what you’ve learned about each of these entrepreneurs: do you think leaders are born or made? Why?

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Fredrick W. Smith, and LeBron James have had similar beginnings and journeys. Although they’re in different career fields, they each had similar journeys. From what I read, unlike LeBron James and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Fredrick W. Smith’s family had a successful business when he was younger. James and Ocasio-Cortez both came from similar background and worked hard to get to where they are now in their professions.

Based on what I read I don’t all leaders or successful people are born that way. I believe it’s based on what an individual does with their cards they’re born with. Each individual figured out what was needed in the world and moved forward to bring it to consumers. all three individuals figure out their niche after hard work.

These three exceptional people, all have had some type of hardship in their early lives. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had taken many low wage jobs to keep her family afloat after the 2008 recession after her father died from cancer. She went on to study at Boston University and then become the youngest woman to be elected into Congress. Frederick W. Smith founded the worldwide famous delivery company, Fedex, which is now one of the largest delievery systems in the world. At a young age, Frederick suffered from Legg-Calvé-Perthes syndrome, which is a potentionally crippling disease. However, he recovered from it and went on to study at Yale Univeristy where he wrote a paper about an overnight delivery service. Lebron James had to take on the challenge of starting on a bottom team and rising all the way to the top to the famous basketball player he is today. He now plays for the world famous basketball team, The Lakers. However, they all differentiate in their abilities and what type of leader they are. A political leader, a business leader, and a sport leader. Each one requires a different set of skills and thinking which makes them individually unique from one another. So, personally, after I read about each story of these great leader, I believe that there are some people who are born to be made into leaders.

LeBron James, the famous professional basketball player, encountered setbacks in his journey to success. Despite his incredible talent, he faced criticism and scrutiny early in his career for his decision to leave his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to join the Miami Heat. The move was controversial and led to backlash from fans and media. However, he eventually returned to the Cavaliers and led them to an NBA championship in 2016. Throughout his career, he’s faced fierce competition, injuries, and the pressures of being a high-profile athlete, but he has consistently overcome these setbacks and achieved great success on the basketball court.
As a high-profile and outspoken politician, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has faced criticism, backlash, and personal attacks from various areas in her life. Her policy proposals and progressive views have generated both strong support and strong opposition, leading to heated debates and sometimes hostile responses.
The early years of FedEx were marked by regulatory challenges, including legal battles over the company’s right to operate and compete in the package delivery industry. Smith had to navigate complex legal and regulatory landscapes to ensure the company’s growth and success. Frederick W. Smith’s determination, strategic vision, and innovative thinking led FedEx to become one of the world’s largest and most successful courier delivery companies. His ability to persevere in the face of adversity played a crucial role in shaping the company’s trajectory and his own legacy as a business leader.
setbacks are a common part of life for many individuals, regardless of their background or achievements. Overcoming challenges and setbacks often contribute to their growth, resilience, and eventual success.

As you mention its not easy having family depend on you during difficult time but yet still pull through that’s not made that’s a natural instinct that’s just kick in to react and act. Leaders are born with the capability to preform in a way no one else can teach or train. Its innate just like those three prominent leaders. You can not train a LEADER to lead they are going to lead with the skills they have.
