The video “Untold Stories of Black Women in the suffrage movement” focuses on a big impact on the rights for not just black women but women in general and for black people, in general, that was born into slavery. It focuses on the period of time such as the American Civil War in 1870 African American men were granted the right to vote with the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment however poll taxes and literacy tests fear intimidation and later Jim Crow laws were used in former slaveholding states to keep them from exercising their right to vote at the age of 16. The women’s suffrage movement was a life-work that included fighting to both end slavery and property ownership of women. How men were allowed to vote before women, it was unfair because women should have a say in society. Different types of protests were created by college students such as marches. During those protests, black women were allowed to march only in the back. Which was unfair because they are still humans fighting for the same freedom and to be treated as equals. By those protests, women were allowed to go to school and earn their degrees and were allowed to vote. Even today women are still protesting and fighting for their rights in today’s society because women are still not being treated as equally and being treated like property.

I agree with Karina Cruz’s post because it focuses on the different types of women asking for people to vote. It’s not just one specific race asking for people to go out, It shows that every woman is going through it. The reading “One Hundred Years toward Suffrage: An Overview” focuses on a timeline of some of the memorable things in history that impacted women or just people in society such as “1833 – Oberlin College became the first coeducational college in the United States. In 1841, Oberlin awarded the first academic degrees to three women. Early graduates include Lucy Stone and Antoinette Brown”, “1839 – Mississippi passes the first Married Women’s Property Act”. “1923 – The National Woman’s Party first proposes the Equal Rights Amendment to eliminate discrimination on the basis of gender. It has never been ratified”. Looking at this timeline showed me how many things women overcame because they weren’t allowed to do half of the things we’re doing in society today, such as speaking their mind, accepting their gender, voting, having education, or choosing not to have children. Another thing that changed my perspective is how black women were suffering just as much or more than white women but history class mostly focused on how the white was suffering and how deeply it impacts them, however, they weren’t talking about the violence black women face for fighting for their rights. I just learned that they were only allowed to march if they stayed in the back.

I agree with Sade Pickering’s post. It shows that women and society stand up for themselves more. The article “Patriarchy, the System” focuses on how men have so much power and believe all of their success is self-made. Society expects women to be perfect having the perfect body and should have no imperfections, no stretch marks, a perfect nose, and the ideal body. We as Females push ourselves to look like that to be accepted. Society expects us to be beautiful, if we are anything less than beautiful it is unacceptable. To society, it’s a woman’s job to be pretty and a man’s job to be smart. Society expects us to be beautiful. Women have to work twice as hard as a man to show that they are smart and that they are more than property.

In “There Is No Hierarchy of Oppressions” focuses on how black women get treated worse than everyone, mostly based on their color and what they identify as. Audre Lorde once quoted “it is the differences that divide us. We cannot recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” Based on gender and as a color people treat you differently and believe that all types of people of color are the same. Instead of considering people’s feelings, make them fear the world more and make them see death and abuse as the only option when it comes to skin color. American ways teach their beliefs of freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. All of these are part of our first right according to the 10th Amendment, however, when it comes to other people, such as people of color, Americans fail to respect these rights and go against their constitutional rights.  society always expects the worst for women especially if they are black, black women in the United States who work full time, year-round are typically paid just 63 cents for every dollar paid to white. Even in movies, they downplay black characters, especially black women characters.  The Princess and the Frog is one of the first black Disney animations, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of that movie is a frog because Tiana character was poor and a frog 90% of the movie, Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa was born into royalty and stayed human throughout the movie. People portray black people as poor and think of them as animals and violent. Some other black movies are played by light skin instead of a black actor/actress because they look more fitted and beautiful, such as the movie The Hate U Give, the character is supposed to be black, however, it didn’t stand the profile of beauty.

I agree with Vanessa Lopez’s post. All over the world male and females from other nations get treated differently based on their race and color, society doesn’t get to know the real them, people just make assumptions based on the color of their skin and where they come from. I read this article by  Anna Deavere Smith “We will all be caught up in this cycle of genocidal, violence that, um, is at the origins of our culture.”  I agree with this quotation that not everyone is born racist, however, the ones who are taught racism, make it difficult for people of different races and backgrounds to feel safe anywhere we go, whether it’s at home, at school, at work, or just in public. In “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” Peggy McIntosh stated, “ I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me”. Most black people live on the darker side of a neighborhood because the higher neighborhood is too expensive and the mortgages are too high, which makes it hard for some black to afford, even living on the darker side rent is still expensive, some people have to get 2 jobs or a side job to pay for living. Being black in this society is honestly so scary, we live in fear and that shouldn’t be happening, we never know if we’re gonna die or not when we get pulled over by cops, we can’t even walk around with hoodies on our heads or hands in our pockets without someone thinking we’re up to no good. Society tends to label black people, as criminals, drug dealers,  being a different color means not having the same rights as a white person, and that most people live on edge based on the fact that they don’t know if they will leave another because of the colored And they always have to pretend to be something they are not to be able to survive. Society has labeled black men, women should be scared of being alone with them. This also is since women are taught to not go out at night because of their gender and are subject to violent actions since they are considered the weaker sex. All in all, it is since society negatively perceives and labels black men as dangerous, they tend to face these kinds of challenges. Stereotypes have led to unwanted, detrimental, and harmful emotions against the communities that help build this country. Black people have to prove themselves and act tough because of their fear to show their true selves to the world, and some because of how the world treats them differently because of their differences from others, which can lead to death or prison. When a black person tries to show that they are like everyone else, they are labeled as “whitewash”. They are not acting stereotypical as people who live in poverty, “the ghetto”, a black person can’t have money or a nice purchase, they are called thieves, drug dealers.

Gender Binary

Gender Binary is described as “The idea that there are only two genders is sometimes called a “gender binary,” because binary means “having two parts” (male and female). Therefore, “non-binary” is one term people use to describe genders that don’t fall into one of these two categories, male or female”.  Reading this definition made it easier to understand the article, and there is more than one opinion in life. Reading the “Beyond the Gender Binary” on (page 16) the quotation “The truth is, I still cannot go outside without being afraid for my safety. There are few spaces where I do not experience harassment for the way I look. Something as simple as running errands leads to strangers interrogating me about my body, trying to find some way to explain why I look like this. “Are you dressed up for a theater production?” “Oh, it must be Fashion Week again!”’ stands out to me because it made me realize not everybody knows about Gender Binary, growing up most people were only taught or learned there are only 2 gender boys or girls. By being taught this it’s weird for people who don’t know about it which leads to people judging or disrespecting the Binary people. Getting criticized for dressing a certain way based on your gender, a male is supposed to dress masculine that include suits with ties, no skirt or legging or jean short, those things make them look too feminine, which means that they can’t run a business properly. Reading an article online explains how the person “Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” by Justin Healey,  “Beyond the Gender Binary” was feeling (page 26-27). “United Nations human rights experts have confirmed that international law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity” what Healey is trying to say is that humans shouldn’t be judged based on what they do. Everybody is their self, they shouldn’t be a law because if people respected each other as they expected people to treat them, sexism wouldn’t be happening, more people would be getting jobs based on their knowledge and not based on their gender. Society shouldn’t have a say in how people should express their feelings, people should be able to express their feelings and ideas even if people have different opinions, we should create our own opinion instead of going along with someone’s opinion that is hurting someone else without fear. It holds diverse viewpoints, it allows freedom of expression, everyone’s voice to be heard, and having a different opinion and still be respected.

“Sex & Gender 101”

I think gender identity is a huge issue in society,  a stereotype of how a woman and men should portray themselves. A woman getting paid more than a man is suspicious, worrying about how we dress or look to fit someone’s standard to fit in, changing our personality to be accepted. Many people have different beliefs, the LGBT+ is one of the groups of people that are scared to be who they are base on how society treats them as sinners, being called names for coming out as a homosexual. Man is supposed to be though, men don’t cry, men don’t wear makeup, a man should act masculine and show no fear. Women are supposed to be mothers, dress feminine, cook, and bake. That’s how society portrays gender.
