Response to Genawang
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a factory that consisted of many female workers that were young and old immigrants. There were 500 workers who worked in that factory. In this factory, the workers would work very long hours, between 11-12 hours every single day. However, in the year of 1911 tragedy struck when a fire started in a bin of cotton. There were 146 people that died either from burning, smoke, inhalation, and jumping to their death. This tragedy happened as a result of carelessness. Many times when people work, their environment is not properly taken care of for the workers. Many managers or bosses ignore the worker’s safety. Imagine working in a factory with hundreds of workers and a fire breaks out and you are trapped because there is barely a way out. Imagine working somewhere where the fire extinguisher was locked or broken and there was one elevator that worked that day that only held 12 people. As a young woman who also works I can relate to what the man was saying in the video. At my job not only do we do a lot of work that requires more pay. However many times the environment is not very safe. It is often cold, slippery and the foods sometimes have rat marks, expired food, and a dirty environment. This can affect the workers because there are many elderly women who work at my job, if anything happens ( For example if someone falls, or gets sick from expired foods or foods with bugs on them). Not only will the workers be affected by this but the whole company can be sued and possibly go out of business because of this negligent act. Another example is when we are dealing with a company that is worth billions of dollars yet the workers are underpaid and treated unfairly. Workers rights go hand and hand with human rights because we have the right to be better and be treated fairly.
I agree with the Genawang post because many women back then were making less money than men. This is something that goes on in many places. Men would work the same job and get paid more than the woman. This is unfair because just like men women also have responsibilities. We deserve higher wages, better working environment and conditions. Finally we deserve the right to have break time in between shifts.
Response to Karina Cruz
I agree with Karina Cruz’s snapshot because I believe that all women should have equal rights that men have. Back then before the 19th amendment it was thought that women did not have a lot of rights. The right to vote was one of them. Women of color were a part of this problem. According Sarah Seidman “ The suffrage movement and the 19th amendment discriminated against many women of color. In New York, the suffrage movement attracted a diverse range of women, including Sarah J.S. Garnet, who founded the Equal Suffrage League in Kings County in the late 1880s and organized for the vote through the National Association of Colored Women, and Mabel Lee, who led a contingent of Chinese and Chinese-American women in a suffrage parade down Fifth Avenue in 1917. Yet white-led suffrage organizations in New York and elsewhere usually excluded Black women and sometimes told them to march at the back of parades”. This explains that during the suffrage movement many black women were discriminated against. Therefore they were excluded from voting. While Mabel Lee and Sarah organized for the vote through the National association of colored women, in New York and in other places black women were not allowed to vote.
It is important for everyone to vote because it is important to have a voice in society. We all should have a voice no matter the sex and no matter the race. By voting we have the ability to change the world. For example, years ago when Trump was president many people were upset that Clinton was not the president. But the truth was that even though Trump is not a good president he was selected because many people were on his side and they voted for him because they. The thing about voting is that even if one person doesn’t vote we are setting ourselves up not knowing that this vote can change our lives forever. If more people had put in their votes we would’ve had a better country. Many things would have improved if more people had cast their vote for their right president ( Hillary). For example her plans were to raise middle class incomes, expand women’s rights, improve health care and more. However because of a few votes we have ruined our chances to have a better economic plan. According to the 19th Amendment “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
In conclusion, I believe that all of us should have rights. Although we are in the 21st century many people of color are still being excluded and ignored. Crime is a prime example. Whenever there was a crime against a white person it would always be on the news and always would be investigated. However whenever a crime is committed against an african american it would be ignored or it will be only on social medias like Instagram, Facebook etc.. All of our voices should be heard because our voices can help change the world and the atrocities we face in it.

Activism is a movement that was done in the 1950s. It is something that is done to bring awareness to an issue that people may have a problem with. For example, since activism started in the 1950s many African-Americans would be the ones to protest because we were the main ones getting targeted. During these years many blacks were facing inequalities and violence in the hands of white people. For example our black men were not allowed to have any conversation with a white woman otherwise there would be serious precautions. In addition schools were segregated, we were not allowed to vote, have an education, the right to have a beautiful home and more. There were a lot of popular black activists. For example Dr Martin Luther king, Rosa parks, Malcolm x were all activists and a part of the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement was a campaign preceded by African Americans to end legalized discrimination, segregation and disenfranchisement in America. Any time I hear the word activist or activism, I think about coming together to end any kind of problems going on in the world. I think that activism helps many people because when activists like Rosa Parks, Dr Martin Luther king, and many more created a campaign to end racism it worked. After some years segregation ended and blacks and whites were finally reunited as one. There were no more laws going against black people voting, inequalities and more.
I agree with Celine Wever’s photo because fighting today will make a better tomorrow. If africans americans did not fight back then for all of us then in 2021 things would be worse. Although history is repeating itself, african americans are now free to do anything they please. Blacks are now allowed to vote, have a beautiful home, the right to be educated, and the end of segregation. The civil rights movements ended years of torture that all african americans went through. Although all blacks were a target, black men had it the worst. For example if any man is seen conversing with a caucasian woman it would be punished. It was so bad that even if a man was smiling or looked at a white woman they would be accused of groping, touching and more incriminating lies would be told against them. Young black men would be told to cross the street and keep their heads down to avoid any interactions with a white woman. Another example is the story of a young teenager named Emmet Till that was visiting his relatives in Money, Mississippi who allegedly whistled at a woman behind a store counter. During the questioning and the investigation the woman claimed that the teenager grabbed her and made advances towards her and whistled. This was a false statement on the woman’s part because witnesses were saying something different. A few days later Emmett Till was beaten and shot to death by the cashier’s husband and the brother of the husband. He was then thrown in a river. After his muder the civil rights movement started emerging because many african americans were enraged by his death.

What is patriarchy?
Patriarchy is male dominance and privilege which has empowered male to control and limit possibilities, controlling their lives and more. An example of patriarchy would be when females would stay home to take off the children, and do all the chores while the men would go to work. In addition Men would be the head of the household. Although this does not happen now but this was a regular occurrence in the 50s and 60s. Furthermore men would be very controlling by dictating how women would dress and limit women from doing things. For example they would underestimate women when women are looking for jobs. Imagine if you are a female and go for a job interview and you want a manager or the boss of the company and you get denied of this position because people don’t believe you can be a boss because of your sex. Some people would believe that because you are a female that you don’t possess a boss quality. They will think that a man will be more qualified for the position because he is more dominant. A while ago I was hearing a conversation on a train and two friends were speaking about a job. One of the friends said they wanted to be a fashion designer and the other said she wanted to be an architect and the friend was so shocked and she stated that this is only a job that men could do. Patriarchy made us have this in mind because decades ago we were taught that females cannot do everything that men can do. Therefore we still have it embedded in our minds. Lastly in the movie entitled “ Selena” Selena’s father wanted to form a band with all of the siblings. Each of them had their own rolls. However, Selena’s sister (Suzette) was forced into playing the drums. She refused to play it because she said that “ Girls don’t play drums.
In conclusion in my opinion patriarchy is almost similar to a privilege. Men would work to get money and they made the rules. While females’ needs and rights were denied. Therefore I agree with Vanessa’s post. There should be no limit to what a woman can do. We could be the head of the household, the carpenter, the architect, the doctor, the teacher. Women also have the right to live their own lives without being punished or judged for it. I have seen this in a lot of African films as well. Whenever the father dies (king) the son always inherits the throne and always gets the privilege to take care of the family and have all the money. Women would even be ridiculed for having a female child and not male child. Although this is a part of their culture it does not make it right. STOP PATRIARCHY

Responding to Vanessa Lopez
I agree with Vanessa Lopez’s picture. Her picture clearly indicates that the caucasian does not understand his privilege. Most often when we say Black lives matter, we are not saying that everyone lives are not important, but because African Americans are the ones being targeted we say Black lives matter. In my opinion caucasians try to take the focus of our problems to say all lives matter. In addition I feel like it is an offensive statement. It basically means that they don’t care about what is going on with us so they make it everyone else’s problem. This is a slogan and a social movement in response to racism and violence perpetrated against black people. When people, especially white people make these comments it shows that they are careless and insensitive. In addition they do not know their privilege as a caucasian man or a woman. If we are still using Black lives matter it clearly indicates that blacks are being killed, targeted and singled out all because of the color of their skin.
