Unit 2: Feb 7 – Feb 23

In class on 2/7:

Asynchronous/ On Your Own before class on 2/9:

  1. Watch/ read: “The World’s Largest Family Reunion… we’re all invited” by A.J. Jacobs/ TED. As you watch this TedTalk, it’s a good idea to have the English subtitles turned on so you can read along as you listen and watch. In class on 2/7, we’ll discuss this, focusing on the summary and main ideas.

2. Draw your family tree and post a picture of your drawing here.

In class on 2/9:

Asynchronous/ On your own before 2/14:

  1. Finish reading The Nature vs Nurture article on Perusall. Add at least 5 annotations to the article.
  2. Conversation 2: Summary and Response.

In class on 7/14

  • summarizing, annotating, paraphrasing and finding a thesis statement
  • Notebook–questions and summaries of “The Nature versus Nurture” article
  • Overview of essay draft for 2/16

Asynchronous/ On your own before 2/16:

  1. Revise your summary and response assignment–bring your essay draft to class on 2/16 for peer review.

In class on 2/16:

Peer Review 1: have your essay draft ready to share with the class + discuss thesis statements

Tuesday, February 21: Classes follow Monday schedule

So: we don’t have class but if you have a class on Mondays then this class meets on Tuesday, February 21st, too.

Asynchronous/ On your own before 2/23:

  1. Revise your summary and response essay.
  2. Schedule a time to meet with an ESL and/ or Writing Center tutor to revise your essay. See here.
  3. Submit your summary and response essay on Blackboard by Thursday, February 23rd.
  4. If you are missing any previous assignments, this is a good time to catch up.

In class on 2/23

  • Read/ watch: Do You Think of sperm donors as family?” byVeerle Provoost/ TEDxGhent
  • Quiz 2: our notebook
  • Verb tenses review
  • Summary and response- in class

Asynchronous/ On your own before 2/28:

Find one TEDTalk video or article about family to share with the class. Post the video or article in Assignments. Summarize and respond to it (in two separate paragraphs). Watch a classmate’s video and write down what you learned.
