Topic: the immigrant experience
Challenge: Present a convincing argument about this topic
First, you will read and summarize the following articles:
Source 1: Key Findings About U.S. Immigration, PEW Research Center
Source 2: “Competition from Within,” by Seth Eislund/ The Immigrant Story
Next, you will interview your classmates about their immigrant experience.
Source 3: Your interviews with classmates and your own experience.
Finally, you will find one source on this topic.
Source 4: select 1 article from The Immigrant Story.
Your final essay should be about 3 pages in length and include the following:
-an introduction (hook, topic overview, thesis statement)
-summaries of the 4 sources, in your own words
-analysis of the 4 sources
-topic sentences for body paragraphs
-a conclusion
Suggested structure:
Introduction: hook + background on topic + thesis statement (your opinion on the immigrant experience)
Body par 1: topic sentence about source 1 + summary of source 1 + your analysis of source 1, including at least 1 quote from source 1
Body par 2: topic sentence about source 2 + summary of source 2 + your analysis of source 2, including at least 1 quote from source 2
Body par 3: topic sentence about source 2 + summary of source 3 + your analysis of source 3, including at least 1 quote from source 3
Body par 4: topic sentence about source 2 + summary of source 4 + your analysis of source 4, including at least 1 quote from source 4
(Optional: body par 5: topic sentence about your own immigrant experience + a story, something you’ve experienced etc)
Conclusion: what you learned from the sources and what you are thinking in conclusion
Your essay should also follow MLA guidelines:
- essays should be written in 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman
- essays should be double-spaced
- include a descriptive title
- include name and page numbers on every page
- include a works cited page
We will have a peer review session during which classmates will comment on your essay and vice versa.
