Final Reflection

Week 15 finally. I have written lots of assignments for this class in the last 15 weeks. One thing I can say is how much I have improved on my writing since the beginning. I can see that I have started to make my sentences slightly longer than before. I elaborate more on my sentences instead of keeping it short and sweet like how I used to. For that I can say I’m truly proud of. I am most proud of my final actually. I know it’s really recent considering I just finished it 10 minutes ago but I feel that I did good on it because I got to be creative and write a script and make the characters say whatever I wanted to. I got to show my sense of humor with that assignment. I was just sitting in my desk typing away. I was in the zone writing the script for my final. I felt like I was at my best writing that. That was my favorite assignment because I had the freedom of writing what I wanted. And I love having the freedom of being able to write what I want. There were two things that I had challenges with this semester. And that was my time management and Module 1. First of my time management was horrible because I would be busy with my own persona life. I work outside of school, I run my own errands, Appointments, making time to hang out with friends, and working out at the gym. And two Module 1 was a struggle for me because I do not enjoy poetry at all. I don’t like reading it, I don’t understand it, I can write it, and most of all, I can’t do an assignment on it. I really don’t enjoy poetry at all mainly because English classes throughout my whole life has made it so complicated that It just gives me a huge headache when I hear Poetry and Assignment in a sentence together. In conclusion, I feel like I’ve came a long way this semester. I’ve definitely surprised myself for sure this semester. I know I can get a lot done and I’m smart I just tend to get lazy and procrastinate a lot and that’s something I really need to work on. I would like to thank Professor Perry for everything. I always wondered what she looked like because she never had her camera on. It would’ve been nice to see what she looks like. But anyways that’s it. Thats all she wrote. Until next time I guess.

Marriage Proposals

In the play ‘The Marriage proposals”, Chekov really shows how silly proposals are. This comedy shows how people would get proposed just because. Most people that got proposed weren’t even compatible with each other or have true feeling towards each other. Being attractive was just enough for them to get proposed. Being married was just something that you needed to do. It was almost like a law. If a woman wasn’t married then she was considered a bad woman. Chekov shows “Symbolic gendering” when Natalya begged her father to get Lomov to come back so he can propose to her. Once she found out that he was there to propose. She was willing to marry him because of how wealthy he is. Examples of current media tho show this is the show “Bachelor”. A bachelor goes on dates with multiple women, he picks the one he likes the most and then he proposes. Another example is MTV “Are You The One”, a bunch of single people move into a house for a few months, they get to know their room mates, they see if they’re a perfect match and then they work on their relationship and fall in love. “The marriage proposal” is definitely an outdated commentary on marriage. Couples these days actually try to build a bond before thinking of proposals. In my opinion I think couples should build a connection first and also communicate with each other and what they want.

Should college be free?

I think about this all the time. I personally think that college should be free. Everything would be so much easier if it was that way. More students would be more successful and the college dropout rate would decline. More people would be more successful and would have better jobs. Students would also go to their dream colleges and get into the programs they want to get the career they want. But also there would be cons to this. I think tax prices would go up due to free college. So we would have to pay more in order to make the funds to cover tuition for a whole country. Also students would not value education, there would be a decline quality of college education, and students will start not taking college seriously. Students would have the idea of “Since I’m going here for free I don’t have to try hard enough”. College would be treated like high school for most people and not come to classes on time, skip class, and miss assignments.

Frankenstein

I chose Frankenstein because I have always been interested in this character. I have always wondered why is he so popular. Every time I would turn on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon when I was growing up there were always halloween specials for shows and the characters would dress up as Frankenstein. I would always say to myself, “why do I always see him?” “what’s so great about him?”. So I see this as a perfect opportunity to learn about the character by picking this assignment. I feel that horror movies have been so popular over the years because we get to know what it feels like to be truly afraid. Especially at the end of the movie when it says “Based on a true story”. Horror is pleasurable to people because we also get to play around with our negative emotions. It gives us people a little thrill. We also probably try to imagine ourselves in the movie and in the characters situation and try to think what we would do if we were in their shoes.

Chopin

I feel like the race of the author does matter especially coming from Kate Chopin who was a white woman living in the 1890s when racism was pretty bad. She has probably never dealt with racism and doesn’t know first hand what it feels like to go what African Americans go through with racism. I feel that the story would be more credible coming from an author who has went through racism and knows what it feels like. She might talk to people who go through racism and try to understand but she would never really know how it feels first hand because she is white. I feel that it is important that whenever we do get a narrative dealing with racism and oppression that we get it from someone that knows what its like to go through it because that way it would be more honest and authentic.

Armand

Armand soon finds the letter. He reads the letter and he drops the letter and starts to stumble in disbelief. He then just has a mix of emotions not knowing what to think and how his wife and son are dead. He starts to think about his whole life is possibly a lie. He looks out into the field and starts to cry because he realizes that the reason that his wife and son is dead is because of him. He asks himself “What have I done?”. Armand goes into depression and he later goes and kills himself because of what he was feeling.

Marxism in the Thirteenth Night & Feminism in Ichoyo

  1. After Oseki accidentally runs into Roku, she learns a lot about what he has been going through. There is a lot of irony in this run in because both Oseki and Roku were very unhappy with their lives. Oseki should be living lavish because she is married, is wealthy, and higher in the social class. But despite her having everything a person can ask for, her marriage is unhealthy. She is very unhappy with how things are with her husband because of how he mistreats her. Roku is not happy because for one he is financially unstable, he lost a daughter, and his marriage is also not doing well. This meeting is so ironic because despite their social class they have a lot in common. Their meeting connects to Marxist theory because both of them are under two different classes and they both have similar struggles.
  2. Oseki represents what it was to be a woman in her time. Back in her era women weren’t respected, they had no legal rights, no power over anything. Women were under the power of men. Their role was to keep their households clean and keep their family fed. They had to do whatever their husbands told them to do in order to keep them pleased. it was hard for women to navigate through systems of power because they were not educated enough how men were in that time because they had been following a system and role that was made for them to follow to please their husbands when they get married.

Government

In both short stories of “This is what it means to say Phoenix, Arizona” and “The trial of Thomas Builds-the-fire” the author Sherman Alexie alludes to a particular government and rulership. The two characteristics of the government system are unjust and discrimination. There was discrimination because when Thomas was in his cell a BIA said “It has to be a felony charge. We don’t need his kind around here anymore. That was a discriminatory comment for them to say about Thomas. A reason why it is also an unjust system is because Thomas was on trial without the judge saying what he was specifically on trial for. In the story it says “Your Honor” he said. “I don’t believe the exact nature of any charges against me has been revealed, let alone detailed.” Already unjust for being on trial without a description on what he was on trial for. Thomas can be seen as an allegorical figure because he is dealing with this discriminatory and unjust system by himself, he is representing himself and also representing Native Americans that are dealing with the same thing that he is going through.

Discussion Post Topic 2

In my opinion parents should tell the truth to their children but also be cautious of what they do and say around them. Children can mimic their parents by saying things they say or do things that they do. Although I’ts okay for parents to tease when it comes to fun fictional kid stuff. Like Santa Clause, The tooth fairy, the monster in the closet can be fun things for kids to look forward to and to have that happy childhood nostalgia when they get older. But also things that doesn’t need to be hidden shouldn’t be necessary to hide from children. Just because they’re young should not mean that they should be hidden from the truth. Also when children are hidden from the truth it could make it worse and make them have a different point of view on things.
