I am not an immigrant to the U.S., but my parents are. They emigrated from Mexico to the United States with the hope of providing a better future for our family and to support their extended family back home.
One specific personal experience that echoes in The House on Mango Street is reminiscent of the vignette titled “No Speak English.” In this vignette, Esperanza’s mother faces challenges as she tries to communicate with English-speaking neighbors, highlighting the struggles of immigrants in adapting to a new culture and language. Similarly, my mother initially faced difficulties with the English language, leading to moments of frustration and isolation. However, like Esperanza’s mother, she persevered and worked tirelessly to improve her language skills, ultimately bridging the communication gap. This reflects the determination and resilience of immigrants like my parents, who overcome barriers in pursuit of a better life for their family, just as the characters in The House on Mango Street do.

Hi Melissa! My parents are also from Mexico and had the same experience as your mom did. It’s very hard to learn a second language and have to face many difficulties from others at the same time. I agree that many immigrants come here to have a better life and are determined to overcome any difficulties they face, Which is why I am very grateful for all the sacrifices my parents have made to make sure I have a better life and future.
