Korb describes “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” as an “inverted fairy tale.” Elements of the short story suggest this interpretation. Connie is being taken away by Arnold Friend, who Korb describes as the “devil.” Arnold Friend is in a disguise which is supported when Connie sees Friend’s true identity as a thirty year old man when she thought he was younger. Arnold Friend continues with this devil-like attitude with revealing things about Connie’s life. As their trip continues Connie has no escape from Friend.
Korb’s interpretation helped me understand the short story more. I was left with more questions especially with the ending and I wasn’t too sure what had happened to Connie.

Eldred, I need a bit more specificity here. You mention the comparison of Arnold Friend with the devil, but what about details that allude to fairytales?
