When Korb says that the story is like an “inverted fairy tale” I had to agree. When I had gotten to the part of connie first meeting Arnold Friend I thought it would end up as connie and Arnold first starting off as enemies with small crushes with one another and then they’d slowly get closer and closer and then they’d end up together but then the entire plot of the story changed when Arnold came to connies driveway and that genuinely confused me because I felt like with the way the story was being written it wouldn’t end up so horrifically. After reading the overview of the story, it gave me more of an insight on why it was written the way it was and what Oates is trying to exemplify in her writing. Overall, this story kept my eyes glued to the page wondering what could happen next.

Samadhi, we need more detail here. Why do you agree with Korb’s interpretation? What scenes or details from the story do you think support the interpretation? When posting, please do not change anything in the Sticky Category box. Just leave that to read “Select a Category.” Thank you!
Hi Samadhi, why do you agree with what Korb interpretation? What makes you think he did a good thing to Connie?
Samadhi, I appreciate your description of your reading process, but have you addressed the Korb article and the interpretation of the story as an “inverted fairytale?” You say you agree with the interpretation, but do you explain why you agree and what Korb’s rationale for the interpretation is?
