Reading a poem involves having an open mindset and analysis.
The poem “How Do I Love Thee?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, involves two components: attitude and technique to help the audience have an understanding of the love she was in with her former lover. For example, imagery is shown in this quote “My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight” (Barrett Browning 3). She is describing how her love goes beyond the limits that can be reached. Even though it may not be physically or shown, the love will remain in her soul. Another quote that shows imagery is “In my old’s griefs, and with my childhood’s faith” (Barrett Browning 10). The “childhood’s faith” expresses the young and innocent love she had with her lover. The author doesn’t say how old she was when she wrote the poem but one thing we know is that no matter how old she is, she will always remember the young love she had.
I like how short and clear your summary was for the quote, it actually summed up what I tried to explain about it in my own response. I basically said that poems force us to get our creative juices flowing, most the time after reading a poem we’re curious because we really don’t have a full understanding yet. These curious thoughts then result in asking questions and using our critical thinking skills to piece together an idea of what we read. As for techniques used in poems like mood, tone, or imagery like you stated, these are all great tools to help the audience feel the reality of the literature being read. The quotes that you use for examples of imagery were great and they support your ideas, expressing to us how deeply the poets love was when she was young.

Anayeli, does this discussion of imagery address the prompt for this week about the reader’s attitude and technique when approaching poetry?
