The quote “Reading a poem is part attitude and part technique” from this week’s 1 reading means needing “attitude” and “technique” to be able to understand a poem.I believe this is what the quote means by the two keys points in the quote. One of the key points would be the word attitude which I believe means having to embrace a poem with being receptive and having an open mind. Technique being the second key point meaning having the skills and strategies while trying to read the poem. A poem that really caught my attention this week was “ How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barret. My experience reading this poem with the two key elements “attitude” and “technique” really helped me better understand what the poem was about. Elizabeth expressed her love for this unknown individual. A quote from the story that I broke down with the two key elements was, “ I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight”.(Elizabeth Barret) What this quote is trying to see is the amount of love she has for this person describing how her soul feels when feeling out of sight.

Hi Eric! I chose this poem for my discussion as well. I also agree that the two key elements did help me understand the poem better especially since imagery is included. The love she had was reachable even though it was not there physically or seen. I also write that love is innocent and young because she mentioned how it was a childhood love. Imagery enhanced ed my understanding of how much that love means to her.
Eric, your post is one of the few that actually addresses the prompt for the week in clear and specific terms.
