Anayeli Maximino Discussion 3

COVID-19 was an unexpected event for everyone and changed our lives. We had to adjust and accept what was happening. There were a lot of arguments about COVID such as whether the vaccine is effective. I was a sophomore in high school. Going to school and seeing my friends not knowing it was going to be the last time I would see them. When school was going to be closed, I was so happy, and the same goes for many students but then it started to affect us socially and emotionally. Being stuck in a room and fearing getting COVID-19 was a huge weight. Not being able to socialize with others and see family members. In the beginning, we saw it as a joke but as time passed it became a devastating event since many people have passed away caused by COVID. The behavior that we had connects with Oedipus’s behavior from Oedipus the King because of how we denied the truth. The citizens were worried about the curse that was happening and wanted it to be resolved. Teiresias said to Oedipus “Since you have taunted me with being blind, here is my word for you. You have your eyes but see not where you are in sin, nor where you live, nor whom you live with” (Sophocles 482-483). He emphasizes that Oedipus is denying the truth and must open his eyes to realize what is happening in his circle. At the beginning of the story, the citizens tried talking to him and asking for help as their leader. But he didn’t do anything, just denying the truth. That is how a lot of us may have felt in the beginning when we found out about the virus. In the beginning, we refused to believe it and thought it was going to go away but once things started to change in a worse way, we accepted it. What I took from this is that the truth will hurt but it’s better to know it.
