Looking back at Covid, it was an odd time to live in. Many Americans were scared because to them it was an unknown virus rapidly spreading across the country. I was aware of COVID around late 2019, while the majority of Americans heard about it early 2020 due the virus spreading in America. Many people were scared about Covid, people were being more cautious about sneezing, people giving weird looks to people who had sneezed, thinking that the person who just sneezed had Covid. There were warning signs about it spreading to the United States, the president at the time ignored it while experts told him that it would become serious. In “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles, Oedipus, just like Trump ignored the expert, Tiresias who is a prophet who warned Oedipus about his fate, for example Oedipus says, “I did not know then you would talk like a fool…” (Sophocles, line 506). It shows Oedipus unwillingness to hear Tiresias about his prophecy because Oedipus doesn’t believe it as truth. Similarly to Trump during Covid, he thought the virus would go away, but Covid continued to spread. Both of these ignorant to accept the warnings both accept their role in power, Trump not getting re-elected mainly due to his mishandling of covid, and Oedipus who lost both of eyes due to not accepting the truth and to getting exiled because of his loss of power. The people in America and in “Oedipus the King” decided who they would like to have in power due to wanting a better leader to guide during a plague.
