Jiyuan Wang Discussion 2

Emily Dickinson’s poem perfectly depicts the burden and expectations society places on a woman and a wife. They are expected to be carefree, happy, supportive of their husbands, and beautiful. Women and wives are expected to conform to these social norms, even though they are individuals with independence. The notion of women having their own will is not widely accepted by society and many husbands. Women must conceal their thoughts. In the book “Another Night at the Club,” Samia, the wife, consistently allows her husband to make decisions for her. When Samia realizes her bracelet is missing, she considers questioning the servant who might know its whereabouts. However, she refrains because deep down she knows that women in her position aren’t allowed to make decisions without the approval of their husbands. Later when she tries to protest against him and propose her thoughts, the husband quickly shuts her up by asserting dominance over her, through a gesture of petting her on her cheeks. The innocent servant suffered from a crime she had never committed. This could have been avoided, if Samia followed her heart and questioned the innocent servant privately, and then she might search the room again for the ring. The husband didn’t care what the servant has to say, he was so irrogant and affirmed in what he believes. He deemed her lying, and turned her to the police without giving it a second thoughts. Because he is the “men”, and he cant be wrong. Samia’s inaction led to the suffering of the poor servant.
