Eric Reyes Discussion 2

The theme in Emily Dickson’s poem “The Wife ” is echoed to the twentieth-century story “ Another Evening at the Club ” written by Alifa Rifaat by both stories being related to women being trapped by men. In the poem “The Wife” Dickinson describes  the wife as a bird being trapped in a cage, unable to free herself from her husband. She’s described as being there for  her husband to whatever he needs or desires. In the poem “The Wife” the author writes, “She rose to his requirement, dropped The playthings of her life To take the honorable work Of woman and of wife.” (Emily Dickison). This gives a brief description on how she is set to drop everything for her husband. The story “Another Evening at the Club ” theme is also similar to “The Wife ” poem. The story talks about how the protagonist Samia is constantly marginalized and silenced by her husband. Story focuses also on how women are to remain subservient to their husbands and families. In the story “ Another Evening at the Club ” the author writes, “ He stood up and gave her a sudden slap on the face. The girl recled back, put one hand to her check, then lowered it again to her chest and made no answer to any of Abboud’s questions.” (Alifa Rifaat). This quote shows how a woman isn’t left with too many options but to just be silent and not respond to the aggression of her husband.
