Elizabeth Reyes Discussion 2

Emily Dickinson poem “The Wife” is heavily echoed in the story “Another Evening at the club” by Alifa Rifaat. Dickson poems depicts the role of a women as being a accessory to a mans world and that same themed in demonstrated numerous times in the story by Rifaat. The first line in Dickson poem is “She rose to his requirement” and in Rifaat story that’s exactly what the husband expected of his wife. The husband reiterates what her father already taught her on her wedding night when he vocalizes that she must behave herself in a manner that represent both of them in a light of excellence. Her existence is to brighten the image of her husband. Dickinson then goes on to say “To take the honorable work of woman and of wife.” The wife in the story reflects that when her first thought after looking endlessly for the ring is not to speak up without reporting to her husband first to see what he decides. She was to afraid to take any unapproved action in the matter because it could have been deemed as unacceptable and could have resulted in unpleasant consequences. Rifaat exercises this continuously through out the story, every move the wife makes is with the husband in mind. Thankfully as a collective society is moving away from this ideology.
