Having “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” by Gabriel Garcias Marquez be the first course of this course is to expose us the a unique style of story telling. It will allow us to think more critically about what the narrative of the stories that we will be read throughout the course. The dead man was the tool for change in the story. With the women who surrounded him and took care him to later having the men helping. His corpse being different allowed the villagers to make change to their village. Making their houses bigger because of him and hoping that he will return. The village had become more peaceful because of the dead man’s body. This is a unique narrative of a dead man who is physical different from the rest of the villagers and being able to be catalyst of change within the community. His corpse symbolizes both change and community bonding.

I agree fully with everything you stated in your response. I too believe that the body represented change within the community, which was obviously needed. The author does a great job describing the body, which gives good visualization of what they’re seeing and why it would spark changes. I like how you mention the women cleaning him off because I felt like that was when they realized how different he was from the rest. I like how you say his corpse was a symbol for community bonding, it totally went over my head while reading. Despite them mentioning how everyone knows each other, they didn’t say if they were close, so this event definitely sparked a bonding moment between the villagers.
