This week we will be reading a selection of short works from the 19th Century, which feature women protagonists: “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, along with the Emily Dickinson’s poem “The Wife.” These stories are accessed on the Commonlit website. If you have not yet joined, please see “Commonlit Sign-up Directions” in COURSE INFORMATION. We will also be reading “Another Evening at the Club” by contemporary Egyptian author Alifa Rifaat, which bears striking similarities to the much earlier works. I look forward to hearing your responses to these quite stunning literary works, which express the unspoken longings of married women spanning two centuries.
There are no classes at BMCC from Friday, September 15 through Sunday, September 17th.
Note: I will reopen Quiz 1 until Wednesday, September 13 because there was a problem with the link for the PowerPoint on which the quiz was based. Please be sure to take this very important quiz , which prepares you for the first essay assignment. If you took the quiz and want to get a better grade, you may also retake it.
Quiz 2 on essay formatting is due Sunday, September 17.
The first draft essay is assigned this week. Please read the directions very carefully.
NOTE: When submitting discussion posts, please do not change anything in the box that reads “Category Stick.” Leave that as is. I will read “Select a Category.”
