Assignments in many disciplines ask you to inform audiences about your topic. Can you think of any examples?
In this class, you will write an informative essay about the stories on social media, and how they affect us. This will also be a documented essay, which means you will conduct research about this topic and include 4 sources in the final draft.
First, you will read and summarize the following Tedtalks/ articles:
- SOURCE 1: “Snapchat Wants You to Post. It’s Willing to Pay Millions.” by Taylor Lorenz.
- SOURCE 2: “Impact of Social Media on Youth” by Katanu Mbevi / TEDxYouth@BrookhouseSchool”
- SOURCE 3: Your interviews with classmates about their use of social media.
- SOURCE 4: The relevant source you found via the BMCC library site.
Finally, you will incorporate all 4 sources into your essay, and let your audience know what you learned from each one.
Final Product: present your argument to your audience in writing, in a format that you think is best. Here are some examples:
- a speech
- a letter
Your final essay should be 5 pages in length and include the following:
-an introduction, with a hook and a statement of purpose
-summaries of the 4 sources, in your own words
-analysis of the 4 sources
-topic sentence for each body paragraph
-a conclusion
-a works cited page listing your 4 sources in MLA style
Your essay should also follow MLA guidelines:
- essays should be written in 12-point font, preferably Times New Roman
- essays should be double-spaced
- include a descriptive title
- include name and page numbers on every page
- include a works cited page (this is in addition to the 4 pages)
We will have a peer review session in class. Please bring two copies of your draft to class.
