What is feminism? (Nay Lin Kyaw)

Feminism is a social, political, and economic movement that promotes human rights and gender equality. Being a feminist means believing in equal rights for all genders. It is not about hating men or the idea of men being better than women. It does not matter who is stronger. It has a variety of beliefs including promoting women’s representation in leadership roles, supporting equal pay, the right to reproductive choice, ending gender-based violence, and addressing equality as men such as race, class, sexuality, and ability within the feminist framework. To me, feminism focuses on creating a world where all individuals, regardless of their gender, have equal rights, opportunities, freedoms and respect each other.

In the article “We Should All Be Feminists”, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie states ‘A feminist is a man or a woman who says – a feminist is a man or a woman who says “Yes, there’s a problem with gender as it is today, and we must fix it. We must do better.”‘ She believes that a feminist is an individual, regardless of gender, who acknowledges that there are issues with gender equality nowadays and wants to change the perspectives of people who do not view men and women as equals.
