Summary
In her TED Talk, "The Danger of a Single Story," Chimamanda Adichie discusses how having a single viewpoint may lead to misunderstandings and a recurrence of stereotypes. She argues that in order to be better and more understanding of others, we should hear different tales. One sided narratives, power to reduce others and draw too much attention to our differences. She wants us to understand the value of storytelling and how it builds connections between people. Adichie also discusses the way in which influential individuals shape narratives and the need to consider the motivations and identity of the storyteller. This enables us to perceive things from several perspectives and keep away of negative biases.
I do agree with Adichie's point, which is that it is difficult and damaging if we are unable to put the people around us into context and choose to believe only the basic stories that are offered. I feel like this talk, Adichie's talk is still important today because we're flooded with quick stories through media. These single stories about places, people, or events can make us believe things without questioning them. We need to remember to dig deeper and seek out different perspectives instead of just accepting what we're told.
