Summary
To Incoming Freshmen at BMCC,
There is a lot to learn from coming to college. You must be prepared for hurdles that come your way and it will be unexpected. You may have financial aid problems which distract you and stress builds up because you are trying to focus on your classes, but you can’t. I advise you to learn financial literacy before or while in college to navigate through college. We are not taught financial literacy in school; it should be a part of the curriculum to help students be more equipped with their finances. Knowing how to manage money is a great discipline and will benefit you later in life. Take advantage of the resources in the school because that’s what they are there for. We know people have hardships and if you are going through something most likely the school can assist you with it whether it is resources in-bound or out-bound resources. When you first get accepted into BMCC, see what programs can help you to lessen the load on you. If you are struggling in your classes, find a student or group of students that are willing to help you and go to tutoring. Many students wait until the end of the semester to see if there is anything they can do to boost their, don’t let that be you. As soon as you start to fail, you should talk to your professors to see how you can do better. All professors have office hours, take advantage of the time to speak with them to build a rapport and to know how and what to do to better yourself as a student. It is great to have an advisor because they are there to guide you to the goal you set and that is to graduate college. They help you with the classes you need to take for your major because if you take classes that don’t pertain to your major, you are now having to spend more money and time in college.
Sincerely, Shada Lauderdale
