Dear Freshman,
First, welcome to your first semester at BMCC! Congratulations on this new chapter in your life, I know you’re having mixed feelings about, and trust me, is it understandable, I felt the same way, but as you’re navigating through college, you’re going to find out college is exactly how you want it to be. It is hard this new chapter, you’re now surrounded by unfamiliar things, but don’t worry, as time passes by, you’ll be happy you get to experience your freshman year. Just like I had someone to give me advice, here goes a list of advice for you to get through your first year of college.
- Be confident, it is one of the most important things in college, believe in yourself, and remember that you’re doing great, you don’t need to compare yourself to others. Be more patient with yourself, don’t forget to be kind and take a break if you need it.
- Time management, remember to set a routine or a time for each thing, be on time for classes, track or set a reminder for your assignments and try to do them on time, not the night before, that way you won’t get stresses for all the accumulated homework, I’m sure you’re going to feel great if you finish it before instead of rushing to finish it.
- Build relationships, be social and make friends, this is the best opportunity to do it, as the semesters go on, it will be harder since everyone is on their own groups later on. Also, build connections with your professors, they don’t have to be your best friends, but having someone experienced in your life feels good, they could guide you to what you need and mentor you through your classes.
- Make sure to use all BMCC available resources that you could need, whether it be tutoring lessons, counseling center, joining clubs, or anything that could improve your experience at college, take advantage of everything BMCC has to offer. Ask if you don’t know, don’t be afraid to reach out for help!
- You don’t have to start it now but get started on what you want after you graduate, consider your options, whether you want to stay in the city or go big in your future. You can always talk with an academic advisor but remember to not feel pressured by what others are doing, focus on yourself!
- Lastly, enjoy your first year! It is a difficult but great start to college, enjoy all you can, but don’t forget your responsibilities!
I hope you have a great start at BMCC, and welcome to college!
Best regards,
Lili.
