The New York Times article “Snapchat Wants You to Post. It’s Willing to Pay Millions.” Introduces Spotlight, a new feature similar to TikTok, where users can share short videos with the potential to earn money based on views. This article takes notice of Cam Casey, a newfound content creator who found success after posting a video on Spotlight. In particular, this success is not only limited to influencers but through the masses of average users, Casey is one of thousands of users who amassed a small fortune through Snapchat.

Snapchat, which has not always been a place of growth for social media creators, aims to change their ways by offering creators a direct path for earning through their content. Snapchat seeks to compete with their counterpart TikTok by providing stronger creator monetization. As TikTok becomes increasingly competitive, more young people are drawn to Spotlight for earning opportunities. However, recent payments have dwindled as earnings are divided among more users daily, prompting creators to collaborate to boost engagement.

Discussions about forming collaborative ventures, including the creation of Snapchat houses, are emerging among Spotlight users, reflecting their aspirations for success and innovation.

I’m not an avid fan of social media, but I do enjoy interacting or engaging with posts that I like. Since I lean on the private side of social media, I like to (primarily) interact with close friends. I think that relying on news or information on social media can be harmful (sometimes) especially since we live in a time where we don’t fact-check or look at the sources. I’ve always been a believer in looking at the bigger picture to get an unbiased opinion before jumping to conclusions
