Summary
In the article “Snapchat wants you to post. It's willing to pay millions”. We are introduced to a new feature on the app Snapchat called spotlight, which allows users to share short-form videos similar to Tik Tok. We first meet a content creator by the name Cam Casey, who was a viral Tik Tok star who decided to upload a random science experiment to Snapchat to where he suddenly went viral. Two weeks later he suddenly had gone completely viral and he became encouraged to post more. As he kept posting he has been able to amass over $3 million from posting. We are then introduced to another creator named Andrea Romo. She was earning minimum wage at another job when she also decided to post a random video to Spotlight that suddenly went viral. This allowed her to make around $500,000 from the video. This new model from snapchat has shown their adaptation to these newer platforms such as Tik Tok or Instagram Reels. In Spotlight, these creators' videos who go viral dont have to be a part of any program or membership in order to receive payments for viral videos. This money being given by snapchat is changing a lot of young people's lives, it's even allowing some teenagers to attend colleges they couldn't even imagine attending because of this new found wealth. Snapchat is setting a new standard with this new feature because of the ease of access for creators to earn money. Snapchat is able to attract a bunch of new creators and users because of this feature and they are already competing with apps like Tik Tok. Spotlight still suffers from a few problems such as the ability to allow creators to amass a following because of the algorithm. It essentially prevents creators from building audiences because of the focus on the app.
I think honestly Fakey really didn't shift my perspective of social media, because I have always been distrustful of news sources on apps like instagram or twitter just because anyone is allowed to post these articles. My social media experience has honestly always been pretty limited, I've found apps like instagram leads to a lot of insecurity for me just because i'm constantly comparing myself with other people. I do love my good old sports and films news though so it's great for that.

I believe sources read online should be looked up to make sure it is a valid resource. Many websites create fake articles for people to read and it’s mainly up to the person viewing the article to acknowledge that it is a fake source. For example, a lot of articles the tabloids put out for celebrities. A lot of them be fake and you are able to tell by small details. I feel like someone wouldn’t be able to spot a fake article if they have no knowledge of who the article is about. I’ve been following politics because of my class last semester and I find it very interesting.
