Summary:
In “Snapchat Wants You to Post. It’s Willing to Pay Millions” by Taylor Lorenz, we get introduced to Snapchat launching “Spotlight”, it’s supposed to replicate TikTok. But something that makes Spotlight different from TikTok is that they pay for content creators who have a viral video. Which has caused most content creators wanting to shift their context to Spotlight. With this launch, it has caused an impact on people’s lives; for example Katie Feeney(18), spotlight has opened more opportunities in colleges due to not having any financial concerns anymore. Spotlight has also helped creators who are doing content full time and are struggling to make a living. Since then TikTok has become more competitive to become successful content creators. Tiktok has created a program where the company approves the content of certain creators. Spotlight will make sure that every creator will have an equal chance to have viral videos. Even though Spotlight is a “financially stable” platform to be on, TikTok is the platform that’s mostly popular. As time has passed by, in order for creators to be known besides being on Spotlight, they would need to have some sort of connection with someone who works in the industry to discuss their earnings and boost each other up. That’s what Metzler’s team has created on snapchat. Another example of Spotlight trying to compete with TikTok, Dominic Andre (27), creates education content and wants to use his earnings to launch a science and education collab house just like the Hype House from TikTok. This article ends with shows how posting and developing internet material became a lucrative business, especially for young people.

I just use Instagram and TikTok. I mostly use Instagram to messages friends and TikTok to find content that I may find interesting. I don’t usually keep up with the news about what’s going in the world, the only way I find about it is if my friends repost something on their social media or on TikTok. When reading this article and playing Fakey, I find interested how platform is becoming our main source in our daily base. I also found the game a bit challenging because I couldn’t view the sources for the stories in the game, which is a key part of how to find out if the news is real or not

Hey Roselen!
Honestly given how the news is told on social media I think it’s pretty smart not to try and follow it through Instagram or TikTok so trusting your friends is a better option for sure. Despite this, you do point out that these platforms have become many people’s main source for news and that is something I also find interesting but also a bit scary. I wanted to say that I had the same challenge when playing Fakey. I rely heavily on being able to see the source of the news when checking if it’s a credible source.
