What did you learn from reading the author’s essay?
Explained very well the point of view that Chimamanda Adichie was trying to prove about the danger of a single story.
Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
Yes, it did include an introduction, she introduced the topic without saying too much, introduced Chimamanda Adichie, and I see her thesis statement.
Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
Yes

“Single stories should be avoided. This is an extremely relevant topic in today’s world and the author brings important points and examples to which the audience can relate.”
Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
Yes, I think so. (not so sure)
Introduction/paragraph 1. “Single stories should be avoided. This is an extremely relevant topic in today’s world and the author brings important points and examples to which the audience can relate.”
Paragraph 2. “Using examples of her personal life, Adichie highlights the problematic of embracing a single point of view about anything, either a person, a culture, or a nation.”
Paragraph 3. “One of the points Adichie uses to justify why single stories can be harmful is the experiences she had after moving to the United States.”
Paragraph 4. “Another important point that sustains the thesis that single stories should be avoided is the idea that they are connected to relations of power.”
Paragraph 5. “When looking at a person, or nation, or culture through the lenses of a single story is impossible to see the whole picture because these stories are stereotypes and “the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”.”
Conclusion/paragraph 6. “The points made by Adichie met the purpose of the speech: alert and reinforce why single stories should be avoided.”
Does the draft include a summary of Adichie’s TedTalk?
Yes
The summary is: too general, includes main ideas and important details only, includes too many details, does not include all main ideas? (circle one and explain). I think it has too many details and examples but that necessarily doesn’t mean its a bad thing. I think it’s great because it really shows how good she understood the TED talk and the reading. It also helps us as readers understand Chimamanda Adichie’s point of the danger of a single story.,

Do you have any other comments or suggestions?

Melanie:
INTRODUCTION
-Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
-Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
-Does the introduction include a thesis? If so, circle it.
The essay does include an introduction that provide some background information: author’s name, name of the speech, what the speech is about. I also really liked the title. I’m not sure about the thesis, maybe the sentence could be “how it effects peoples perspective if viewing things”.
BODY OF THE TEXT
-Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
-Does the draft include a summary of Adichie’s TedTalk?
The summary is: too general, includes main ideas and important details only, includes too many details, does not include all main ideas? (circle one and explain).
I feel like the summary got mixed with the analysis, like there are bits of summary throughout the text (I’m not sure if we should dedicate one paragraph only to the summary), but I feel like you could short the summary and dedicate the rest of paragraphs to analysis? Maybe bring more quotes to support your thesis? I don’t know if this is clear…
ANALYSIS + CONCLUSION
-Does the draft include analysis of the text? Are there quotes followed by explanations?
-Does the author include a conclusion?
Again, I feel like the analysis could be less summary-ish and more quotes+explaining. Even though I can see you wrote interpretations for the bits of text you brought up, I liked your ideas. Melanie mentioned she haven’t included her conclusion yet.
Other suggestions: just minor adjustments to font color throughout the text, punctuation, etc. But overall I liked your ideas!
Mary:
INTRODUCTION
-Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
-Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
-Does the introduction include a thesis? If so, circle it.
The introduction talks the name of the author, name of the speech and a brief information what the speech is about. Again, I’m not sure what could be considered a thesis, maybe the sentence “how America and American media, white males, and educators in the U.S. all contribute to the making of single stories, constantly portraying a group of people as one thing over, and over again, then that’s what they become in society”.
I feel the summary got mixed with the analysis, I can see your brought your own ideas about bits of the speech (which is great!) but maybe separate and write one paragraph with a short summary and then use the rest of paragraphs to bring quotes that sustain your thesis? I don’t know if that’s clear and that’s my point of view of what I understood from the assignment.
ANALYSIS + CONCLUSION
-Does the draft include analysis of the text? Are there quotes followed by explanations?
-Does the author include a conclusion?
I like the last sentence on your essay, so maybe you could elaborate on that to tie your text with your thesis.

What did you learn from reading the author’s essay?
The author’s essay focuses on stereotypes and how the media coverage affects it, talking about how different can it be once we overcome those stereotypes and do not get onto one narrative only, to expand and understand other perspectives.
Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
There is not a specific introduction yet. Mainly highlighted speaker’s name and put ideas about the ted talk.
Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
There are vague ideas about context and background.
Does the introduction include a thesis? If so, circle it.
There’s no structured introduction.
Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
N/A
Does the draft include a summary of Adichie’s TedTalk?
Not a structured paragraph.
The summary is: too general, includes main ideas and important details only, includes too many details, does not include all main ideas? (circle one and explain).
There is not a specific paragraph on the summary, has main points but is not structured yet.
Does the draft include an analysis of the text? Are there quotes followed by explanations?
Yes, the analysis is mainly on stereotypes and what we learned about Chimamanda Adichie’s story. All quotes mentioned are analyzed with the author’s perspective.
Does the author include a conclusion?
Not yet.
I learned that an individual can perceive you differently just from a single story someone else told. I’ve reviewed Jana’s essay and it does have an introduction because she is telling the beginning of a single story for Adichie. The introduction does provide background information on the assigned topic. The thesis statement is to her, single stories are dangerous and feed stereotypes. In her speech, Adichie encourages her listeners to seek diverse and multiple stories to gain a more significant and empathetic understanding of the world. The body paragraphs do begin with a topic sentence although some of the topic sentences can be changed as well as mine. The draft does include a summary of Adichie’s Tedtalk. The summary did not have enough important details. The draft did include an analysis in the essay. The author does include a conclusion. My other comments for Jana would be to give examples from the text of the danger of a single story.
For Alex:
What did you learn from reading the author’s essay?
I got an explanation of Adichie’s definition of a single story along with a few examples throughout her life.
Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
I think it’s a solid start for your draft. You highlight your thesis clearly I have a pretty good idea of what you’ll touch on through the essay.
Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
It does.
Does the introduction include a thesis? If so, circle it.
“After years of noticing stereotypes and biased judgments being placed upon her and others like her. Adichie speaks on a single story. It’s cause, effect and origin.” I would consider this the thesis but I think it could be condensed into a single sentence, maybe two. Everything is mapped out here though.
Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
“A story without context is one of the defining factors in creating a single story. Adichie discusses how early on these single stories are fed to us with her story of Fide.” A good start to the first analysis paragraph. Keep this up!
Does the draft include a summary of Adichie’s TedTalk?
I think the summary is a bit too general. Adding more detail and maybe another example will give more options to refer back to for your analysis.
Does the draft include analysis of the text? Are there quotes followed by explanations?
Not yet. This draft was mostly the introduction and summary so no in depth analysis yet. I think it does work as a decent roadmap for the rest of the essay though.
Does the author include a conclusion?
No. Still a working draft.
For Leslie:
What did you learn from reading the author’s essay?
This essay talks about how a single story can restrict our ability to connect with others.
Does the draft include an introduction? Explain.
There is an intro but the way it is formatted makes it almost feel like more of a conclusion. I’m having trouble describing it but the thesis almost feels a little vague.
Does the introduction provide background information on the assigned topic?
It does.
Does the introduction include a thesis? If so, circle it.
I’ll admit I’m having trouble finding a specific thesis. I see an intro to the topic but now how it will exactly be explored.
Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
Adichi notes that she was also duped by a single tale her mother had told her about a very impoverished family, but that when she eventually went to see them, she saw that they were able to sit here and make things out of the tiniest things.
Does the draft include a summary of Adichie’s TedTalk?
There is no separate summary, there is a little bit of a summary of Fide’s example but nothing for her talk overall.
Does the draft include analysis of the text? Are there quotes followed by explanations?
There is analysis with quotes and I think what is here is good and the quotes are used effectively.
Does the author include a conclusion?
There is a conclusion.

Does each body paragraph begin with a topic sentence? If so, underline them.
I think basically there are.
“A single story can let us become stereotypical people and judge something more directly.”
“First, the power of country and politics, just like the parents and us, tell the story which part to others, can control the story.”
“Furthermore, I don’t think so this was Adichie problem that was thinking they are “the abject immigrant.”

1. I learned that single stories are not complete and that Chimamanda claims that point explaining her perspective of growing up only having access to western literarature.
– It does. Reading the summary provides the reader with enough information to understand the story and to know what the analysis will be about;
– Her summary gives background of Chimamanda life’s as her past experiences navigating life;
– I see a thesis in her summary that intrigues the writer when she says that the danger of a single story is solely based on that story and how the individuals are viewed after;
– It does. In the first paragraph, she introduces what the story is about. Her next paragraphs also start defining what the paragraphs will be about:
In the TED talk, “The Danger of a Single Story,” a Nigerian woman tells a story of her love for reading and writing at an early age
This was when Adichie understood the danger of a single story.
At the age of eight, Adichie’s parents got a new house boy named Fide
At nineteen, Adichie left Nigeria to go to a university in the United States.
After spending years in America, Adichie began to understand her roommate’s view on Africa.
Adichie went to a t.v. station in Lagos shortly after her book was published to do an interview.
Adichie started a non-profit with her Nigerian publisher called Farafina Trust.
– Yes, the author presented a summary.
– The summary includes the main ideas and details that are brought by Chimamanda. When the author brings the example of Fide’s family and also the example of the roommate that moves to the US, my suggestion was that she could connect those two paragraphs to bring the main idea on why Chimamanda chose those examples to persuade her point of the danger of a single story.
– The draft includes the summary of her piece.
– The author brought the conclusion of her summary (the last paragraph summarizing how Chimamanda ends her speech).
The author brought many ideas and information about the speech, my only suggestion would be that some of them could be connected and turned into a “main point” rather than summarizing paragraph by paragraph.

Ziping
What did you learn from reading the author’s essay?
I learned that when Ziping was younger, he learned many stories from his mother—she basically was his source of news. He believed her, and her words were like gospel to him, thinking she would never steer him wrong. I also learned that he’d met someone with the opinions that ‘wi-fi is dangerous,’ ‘covid was fake,’ and electronic devices are harmful. Being older and knowing better, he didn’t take this person’s narratives seriously, not even a bit.

1. What I learned from reading Gabriel’s essay is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk “The Danger of a Single Story” highlights the importance of a single story about a person or place, focusing on her childhood experiences in Nigeria. Adichie’s childhood exposure to white, Western European authors influenced her perception of the world, leading her to believe that all stories had to be about white people. This single story, however, did not highlight the rich lives and skills of African writers. Adichie’s experiences in the United States and Mexico also highlight the negative perceptions of Africans. Her college roommate’s single story about her as African, a single story of catastrophe, made her see Africans as suffering masses rather than individuals. This lack of humanization can make it difficult to create connections with people who are not like her. Adichie’s experiences with Fide, her roommate, and the people she met in Mexico highlight the lack of humanization that comes with having a simplistic view. She urges us to seek out and listen to the many personal stories that exist due to social media and other sources to avoid alienation and having the worst impressions of others.
2. Yes the essay does include an Introduction. Gabriels introduction is ” Adichie starts by giving an example from her childhood growing up in Nigeria. As her parents were middle class and academics, she had access to many books which she started reading from the age of four. She talks about their impact on her perception of the world because all the books she read as a child were by and about white, Western European authors, so she believed that all stories had to be about white people even if she couldn’t relate to them. While she would eventually discover successful African writers to read and love the white authors she grew up with, this first story highlights the ubiquity of Western white authors on a global stage. This being at the cost of calling attention to powerful voices outside of that specific sphere, or single story, people might relate to more.”
3. Yes the introduction provided background information on the assigned topic. Gabriels essay had pointed out about the reason why Adichie wanted others to know about The dangers of a single story.
