  1. How does the author feel about her writing abilities?

The author feels confident in her writing abilities, passing her honors English class with an A. She was confident when taking the standardized proficiency test because she’s always been an honor roll student and according to her, writing is easy. After failing the exam, she felt less confident about her writing skills, she stopped trying as hard as she used to. Her love for reading and writing slowly died due to this experience.

2. How does the author feel about standardized tests?

She hates them or at least thinks that the people grading the exams, “have the slightest clue about what constituted good writing”. She doesn’t like them because before the exams, she loved writing, it was one of her strengths but the test killed her passion for it. Adding insult to injury, the test didn’t provide any sort of explanation for the grade a student received so she never got closure on what she did wrong.

4. If you were Mrs. Brown, the author’s English teacher, what would you say when the author asked: “How can I get A’s in all my English classes but fail the writing part of the proficiency test twice?”

If I were Mrs. Brown, the author’s English teacher, I would tell the author this, “I am not sure how they grade students test or their ability to write but I am certain of one thing, you’re writing is incredible, if they can’t see that, that’s their problem and their loss because I have seen you’re work and its amazing”. “Don’t feel or be discouraged, we both know what you’re capable of so be proud of yourself”.

6. How do you feel about your writing abilities?

I’m not too confident in my writing abilities, writing has never been one of my strengths. At times it feels like i’m illiterate if i’m being honest but thats probably just me overthinking. I know I can improve, I just have to dedicate time and effort into it.
