Darrel McLaurin Conversation 1

How does the author feel about her writing ability?

The author Shannon Nicholls feels assured about her writing ability because she would love to read and write. When taking a test that covered reading, writing, math and citizenship her thoughts were ” I was sure I had passed every part.to my surprise, I did pass every part-except writing. Writing!”. This shows her being assured of her writing ability as she would expect to pass everything especially writing.

If you were Mrs. Brown, the author’s English teacher, what would you say when the author asked: “How can I get A’s in all my English classes but fail the writing part of the proficiency test twice?”

I would be unsure what to say but to tell her that maybe the people grading her test grade differently and that she can just keep trying to improve in her writing to eventually pass.

Retell the author’s journey as a writer

Shannon Nicholls was a 3.0 gpa student who strengths were writing. She was always on the honor roll and knew she was smart. She loved to write until she was faced with a proficiency test that made her lose her love of writing. Taking the test the test the first time she already started to lose the love to write and would doubt herself. As she went on to the test for a second time, she would fail again making it worse and which would cause herself to stop taking it seriously to avoid doubting herself even more. By her not passing the tests she would feel like a failure and felt she was disappointing her family. Fortunately taking the test for a 3rd time she would barley pass with a 2 and continue her lack of seriousness with writing. To summarize she implies” After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing, and I started to doubt myself”. stating this explains her start to losing her interest in writing.

How do you feel about your writing abilities?

I feel my writing ability is not as strong as it could be as I’m not much of a writer. I Haven’t really put much effort into writing, but I feel as if I tried and took all the feedback, I can get about my writing it can be good.
