Module 14 Environments Activity 3: Self-Reflection

At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 209 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).

  • What did you learn in this module?
    • Information/ knowledge
    • Skills
    • Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
  • How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with infants?

  1. I learned about the importance of providing a rich environment to children, spaces to encourage motor learning, language learning, and provide a variety of open-ended materials. This material will help me to better prepare myself to work with babies because I have learned how to create a classroom for babies.

  2. This week I learned about what belongs in an infant classroom. I learned how to build my classroom to make it an open and safe learning environment for infants. This will help me better prepare to work with babies because I will now know what I would want my future classroom would look like.

  3. In this Module, I learned about the importance of having a healthy learning environment for infants and toddlers. These are important ideas to consider: the infant classroom environment should have plenty of space to crawl and creep because toddlers need an environment that encourages movement. A homelike environment, so infants and toddlers can feel welcome and comfortable; for instance, families’ pictures display on the classroom walls, representative objects from their home countries (instruments, artwork). Safe and comfortable provide furniture typically from home in child size, so they can independently move and play. Adequate space so children can actively move and play and adult size comfortable sitting, so parents can socialize with other parents.
