At the end of the semester you will determine your grade for ECE 209 based on your self-assessment of what you have learned. In preparation for your self-assessment, answer the questions below; you will answer these questions at the end of each module so you have a record of what you have learned over the semester. You can answer the questions here on Open Lab or create a journal on Blackboard (which would be private).
- What did you learn in this module?
- Information/ knowledge
- Skills
- Insights (connections you made or “ah-ha’s” you had about the material)
- How will the material from this module better prepare you to work with infants?
This Module #11 I learned a lot of interesting things, starting with the importance of encouraging math into the classroom. There are different materials that support math skills such as: blocks, books/songs, shape sorter, and stacking rings. Something that cough my attention was how songs such as “The wheels on the bus ” or “5 little monkeys jumping on the bed” can introduce math concepts such as “up and down”, as well as counting when singing “5 little monkeys were jumping on the bed”, in the song, one monkey fell off the bed, consequently there were only 4 monkeys left on the bed; consequently, children are learning about numbers, and at the same time subtracting. I also, learned about the huge role of playing in order to support the children’s development. There are a variety of play materials that support the child’s development in different ways.
In this module I learned how important math is to baby development, how I can support baby’s development through play, and also about family engagement.

In this module, I learned about how teachers can incorporate math skills in the classroom. There are many ways to incorporate math skills, for example, coming up with a dance, singing songs, having certain toys like stacking rings, shape sorters, and many others. I learned about the different play materials that can help with an infant’s development. The materials in this module will help me better prepare to work with children because when I get into an actual classroom, I can see what developmental setbacks they are having and try to help them by giving them materials that focus specifically on which development they are having a hard time with.
This module has taught me the importance of math and play. There were a lot of toys that children play with that i didn’t know was related to math. There are so many things children do and you just look at it as nothing but in reality it all contributes to there development.
In this module I learned about the variety of play materials that support the child’s development in different ways and how important it is to incorporate math into babies development.
In module #11 I learned how important play is in a child development, and how having multiple options of it can come in handy for both ends.
In Module 11, I learned about the importance of toys, play and how children are learning and developing through experimentation. I learned that practices that engage families, through partnering with teachers, are essential to the infant and beneficial to the learning program.
My “A-ha” moment was discovering that the little ones are exploring Math at such an early age!
